The history I wrote with my junior in high school
On March 31, the KIA Tigers lost the game against the Doosan Bears in Gwangju 6-30. The gap between the two teams was the largest in score history and the game in which they lost the most points.
In the top of the ninth inning, a scene that led Kia fans to cheers appeared. Outfielder Park Jung-woo (26) took the mound.
"Coach Lee Bum-ho said, 'I think a fielder should throw a ball in the ninth inning. (Former) Sang-hyun or (Lim) Ki-young said they could throw a ball, but I thought it could interfere with the next game. I thought the game was over,'" KIA manager Lee Bum-ho said.
Park Jeong-woo pitched better than expected. His maximum speed on the fastball stayed in the mid-130km/h range, but his pitching form was so good that he was almost as good as a pitcher. Some on-site officials asked Park if he was a pitcher the next day.
Doosan batter also did not face 100% but Park Jung-woo finished the inning with three outs. Kim Jae-hwan and Kang Seung-ho, who had home runs on the day, were grounded out to second base and struck out, respectively, and Kwon Hwi, who came to the batter's box as the last pitcher, also struck out.
Park Jung-woo said, "I've been preparing since the eighth inning," adding, "I think I'm on the mound for the first time in 10 to 11 years."
Coincidentally, Kwon Hwi, who came to bat last, was a two-year veteran of Park Jeong-woo. He had spent a year together in high school. However, the roles of fielders and pitchers have changed, which could have made him laugh.
Park Jung-woo said, "Kwon Hwi stopped me when I came to the batter's box. He didn't even wear gloves."
Park Jung-woo faced Kwon Hwi as the leadoff hitter in the bottom of the ninth inning. The result was a fly ball on the first pitch. "The ball got a lot better," Park said.
The showdown between Park Jung-woo and Kwon Hwi has renewed the history of the KBO League. Pitcher-batter confrontations took place three times in the same game in the KBO League, including Tuesday's game. However, it is the first time that a pitcher and a pitcher faced off each other in rotation.
It was clear why Park was picked as a pitcher. He had good qualities as a pitcher. "I even made him pitch when the bat didn't fit in the Futures League," Lee said.
Kwon said, "He was a natural thrower in high school, too." Park gave a humble answer, saying, "He was just a good shoulder player."
"I threw around 70 percent of the time. If I throw with full power, I think I can reach 145 kilometers," Park said. "But if I throw with full power, I could hit it again, so I was careful."
Although he made his debut as a pitcher, Park Jung-woo expressed his desire to succeed as a batter. "He says he turns into a pitcher when he doesn't feel right, but now he really wants to do well as a batter," he said. "I will do everything I can on the ground in the future."
