Ronaldo's greed knows no bounds.
Portugal's Cristiano Ronaldo, 39, has announced his intention to play in the 2026 World Cup in North and Central America. He'll be 41 years old in 2026, having already exposed his worst performance at Euro 2024 this year. There is likely no longer a place for him in the Portuguese national team.
"I think I can play for Portugal at the 2026 World Cup," Ronaldo said on July 7 (ET), according to CristianoExtra, a social media outlet that specializes in Ronaldo news.
Of course, no one knows if the coach who will be in charge of the Portuguese national team at that point will feel the same way.
Spanish outlet Relevo also reported that "Ronaldo wants to play in the 2026 World Cup. Portugal will accept it," he said.
"Ronaldo has the ability to become the only player in history to play in six World Cups," said Relevo. Ronaldo was a candidate for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar under Fernando Santos. However, after Roberto Martinez took over in 2023, 고스톱사이트 he regained a major role," he explained.
In his opinion, Ronaldo still has a role to play in the Portuguese national team.
'Ronaldo didn't have his best game at Euro 2024, but he was the most confident player in the squad in terms of details and shooting,' he said.
The Manchester Evening News, on the other hand, was more pessimistic.
'Ronaldo may have made it to Euro 2024, but the World Cup in two years' time could be a different story. Ronaldo's future with the national team remains uncertain.
The Manchester Evening News said: 'Ronaldo has revealed that the Euro, which he will play at 39, will be his last. That doesn't rule out the World Cup in North and Central America in two years' time. He has already hinted that he would be willing to board a plane to North America regardless of his age.
"At the moment, nothing has been decided. There is no personal decision yet."
Former United manager Sir Alex Ferguson was less positive.
"I can't imagine (Ronaldo playing in the 2026 World Cup)," Ferguson said. Football is going to be faster and more athletic. There will be less and less space for central strikers. Unlike defenders, strikers find it harder to play at the highest level as they get older."
