Mandatory leave for half of Kangwon Land employees until January 31st
Kangwon Land, the operator of Kangwon Land (pictured), the only casino resort in the country that has allowed bets to locals, confirmed to GGRA that since Dec. 29, half of its roughly 3,700 employees have been on compulsory leave, initially without pay and later with pay cut.
The measures related to the suspension after Dec. 8 as a measure against COVID-19 affect 1,958 workers and will remain in place until Jan. 31, the company responded to phone inquiries from GGRAsia on Thursday.
Local media reported that the company originally planned to take unpaid leave for the entire period, but after complaints from workers and lobbying, it agreed on a form of pay cuts.
The company confirmed to GGRAsia that the employees are receiving "emergency livelihood support" for 70% of their monthly base salary. The payment support was decided at an emergency board meeting on Jan. 18.
Kangwon Land has suspended operations several times throughout 2020 due to COVID-19 measures. The latest will start on Dec. 8 and run until 6 a.m. on Feb. 1.
A Kangwon Land official told GGRAsia that a longer suspension of the resort's operations beyond Feb. 1 could extend the mandatory leave for workers.
Kangwon Land Casino's first temporary closure due to its COVID-19 response in 2020 was Feb. 23 to July 20, but its membership-only space for high-value customers temporarily reopened from early May. The second suspension was Aug. 21 to Oct. 12.
As of 12 a.m. on Friday, South Korea recorded 346 new COVID-19 cases in a 24-hour period. Since the start of the crisis, the nationwide tally stood at 74,262, including 1,328 deaths, according to data from the Ministry of Health and Welfare.
Kangwon Land Resort is located in a remote alpine area outside the capital city of Seoul.
In late December, Kangwon Land Inc. was confirmed to have received a new three-year casino license from the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism. The new license period is from Jan. 1, 2021, to Dec. 31, 2023.
