Grand Korea, Seoul, Busan Casino Closes to Feb. 1
Grand Korea Leisure Inc. (GKL), which operates foreigner-only casinos in South Korea, said Monday (Jan. 18) that two Seoul locations and one Busan location will be closed until Feb. 1 at 9 a.m. Two Seoul locations were temporarily suspended from Nov. 24 and two Busan locations from Dec. 1 due to COVID-19 measures, but the existing closure notice for the three locations was set to expire on Monday.
The company also said in an update filing with the Korea Exchange that it raised its expected loss on net sales of casinos to about 27.5 billion won from 21.5 billion won earlier due to the extended closure. The revised forecast was based on the company's average daily net sales for the July-September period, as was the previous forecast.
The Grand Korea leisure sites that have been closed until Feb. 1 are COEX in Gangnam, Seoul, operated under the Seven Luck brand, and Lotte in Busan in the southern port city of Busan.
The company said in a filing on Monday that the reason it closed its venues was because COVID-19 social distancing measures across the country had been renewed.
The South Korean government said Saturday it would extend the so-called 2.5 level distancing measures through Jan. 31, the second-highest level of the five-tier plan for the Seoul area, and up to the second level for the rest of the country. Such measures may have coincided with the closure of casinos in the country.
