MGM Resorts Gets Massachusetts Casino License
Massachusetts Gambling Regulators on Friday approved the $800 million MGM Resorts International Casino in the state. MGM Resorts is the first casino operator to obtain a license in the state.
The decision comes after a two-year hearing and background check process concluded with a final week of hearings and deliberations.
The Massachusetts Gaming Commission (MGC) unanimously approved licensing MGM on Friday.
The commission's chairman, Stephen Crosby, said the project captures the "spirit" and "desire" that state leaders envisioned when they opened the door to resort-style casino gambling in Massachusetts in 2011.
The 2011 law allows three resort-style casinos with hotels, slots and table games, and one slot-only facility.
MGM Resorts officially announced its interest in the casino resort in Springfield in August 2012. At one point, there was a field of five companies competing for the only casino license in Western Massachusetts.
MGM Resorts CEO Jim Murren said he will work with government leaders, residents, and businesses to advance the project. "We thank the Massachusetts Games Commission for its thorough review process and look forward to continuing our work," Murren said in a statement.
MGM Springfield, scheduled to open in early 2017, is expected to create 3,000 jobs and $25 million annually for Springfield's coffers. The project will include a 25-story hotel, 3,000 slot machines and 75 game tables, the company said.
On Friday, Massachusetts's gambling regulator decided to withhold $85 million in state license fees, as casinos still face voting threats to repeal casino laws. The state's highest court is expected to decide next month whether to allow repeal questions on the November vote.
Wynn Resorts Ltd and Mohegan Sun are still fighting in Boston for casino resort licenses. The Massachusetts Games Board expects to make a decision in Boston in late summer.
