Additional review of KINTEX, Casino, and Hotel in Seoul Exhibition Hall
Organizers of KINTEX, South Korea's largest exhibition center, said Tuesday in response to phone inquiries from GGRA that they were considering asking the South Korean government for a casino site.
Currently, only one of Korea's casinos, Kangwon Land, can provide services to local players. The rest are foreigner-only facilities.
KINTEX is originally operated by KINTEX Inc., a company specializing in manufacturing industrial materials. The complex is located in the northwest of the Seoul metropolitan area. The site currently has two exhibition halls that occupy a total exhibition area of 108,011 square feet.
According to KINTEX officials, the center is interested in building a third zone on the site, which will include a hotel and a casino. The new zone will occupy 293,735 sq. m, including about 70,000 sq. m of exhibition space, and cost about 485.3 billion won ($448.8 million) to develop.
The KINTEX representative also told GGRAsia that he first considered applying for additional casinos in 2009 following a related business proposal from U.S.-based leisure resort owner Central Florida Investments Inc., but the idea did not go ahead.
The idea of adding casinos as well as hotels is to compete with a market in Singapore for conferences, incentives, conferences and exhibitions (MICE) and Japan's planned Integrated Resorts (IR) project, which will mix the gaming business with conferences and leisure trade, organizers said. Singapore has had a dual casino monopoly as well as been a regional hub for conferences and events since before the pandemic.
KINTEX's proposal for on-site hotels and casinos went through some form of "evaluation" by the South Korean government in January 2020. Currently, the plan was in the "master plan" phase.
According to KINTEX's plan, the expo center will have a total exhibition area of 178,566 square meters, more than the 10th largest in Asia and about 20th among exhibition centers worldwide, the official added.
