What is the rare disqualification from the KPGA Tour
Park Sung-je was disqualified as a five-ball player after finishing the fourth hole (par 4) on the first day of the KPGA Tour KB Finance Live Championship at Blackstone Golf Club (par 72, 7270 yards) in Icheon, Gyeonggi Province on the 23rd.
Here's the story.
When the tee shot at Hole 4 flew into the forest, Park hit the Providence Journal ball (provisional ball) and settled it on the fairway. He found the original ball in the forest, but it was difficult to take a shot. Even if he tried to declare "unplayable" after receiving a penalty hit, there was no room for the ball to drop within two clubs. Park gave up the original ball and hit the Providence Journal ball.
The KPGA explained that this is a five-ball game. As soon as the ball was found, the Providence Journal ball was a ball that was not supposed to be "ball dead." If Park Sung-je had no room to drop the ball even after declaring "unflatable," he should have chosen to return to the spot where he hit the tee shot, add one more penalty, and hit it again. "Not only golfers but professional players know that it is a five-ball game if the ball continues with the Providence Journal ball because it is bad where the ball was placed when the ball was found," said Kwon Cheong-won, chairman of the KPGA Tour's competition committee.
He had a chance to save the ball. Had he received two penalties for the five-hole tee shot, he could not have been disqualified. However, Park hit a tee shot at the fifth hole without recognizing the five-hole tee shot, and was eventually disqualified.
Meanwhile, Ahn Jun-hyung, who recorded five birdies without a bogey, took the lead on the first day of the tournament.
