Description
Grasteinn Guesthouse is a magical choice of accommodation with a variety of cottages and rooms in the untouched wilderness of Northeast Iceland. Those looking to get well off the beaten track for an unforgettable escape and those on a slow-paced ring road journey should book their stay now!
Location and Nearby
Grasteinn Guesthouse has a remote, desirable location in a far-flung corner of northeast Iceland, nine miles (15 kilometers) from the village of Thorshofn. Though small, this settlement of just over 300 people has services for travelers such as gas stations and grocery stores. It also has a domestic airport connecting it with Reykjavik and other parts of the country.
The main advantage of staying at Grasteinn Guesthouse is how far it is from the major tourist trail. Most travelers embarking on a ring road journey entirely skip this region as they travel between the east and north despite its incredible beauty. The fjords are spectacular, with towering mountains and sparkling waters, and are home to an abundance of wildlife. In summer, you may even see great whales and puffins on your exploration.
Despite its remoteness, there are still popular attractions within easy driving distance. The Arctic Henge, a spectacular monument inspired by the Old Norse beliefs and constructions such as Stonehenge, can be found 37 miles (60 kilometers) from the guesthouse. Meanwhile, the incredible horseshoe-shaped canyon of Asbyrgi is 47 miles (75 kilometers) away, where you can embark on some of the country’s best hiking trails.
The most powerful waterfall in Europe, Dettifoss, can be reached by driving 60 miles (97 kilometers). This site is surrounded by lava landscapes and is close to other waterfalls such as Selfoss and Hafragilsfoss.
All of these are sites in north Iceland, but the fjords of the east are similarly accessible. The closest of these, Vopnafjordur, is 49 miles (79 kilometers) away. You can then continue along a stunning coastal route from here, reaching sites such as Borgarfjordur Eystri, Hengifoss waterfall, and Lake Lagarfljot.
