Summary
Description
Hengifoss Guesthouse is a beautiful place to stay in East Iceland, far from signs of civilization but boasting modern amenities such as free WiFi. Those encircling the Ring Road or exploring the Eastfjords looking to stay close to incredible natural attractions like Lake Lagarfjlot and Hengifoss waterfall should book their place now.
Location and Nearby
Hengifoss Guesthouse is immersed deep in the landscapes of East Iceland, about half a mile (one kilometer) from the southern shore of Lake Lagarfjlot. This beautiful body of water is a birdwatching and fishing hot spot and, according to folklore, home to the Lagarfjlot Wyrm, a monstrous creature.
The accommodation is named after the third-tallest waterfall in Iceland, Hengifoss, the hiking path to which is five miles (eight kilometers) north. Hengifoss falls off a cliff layered with red strata, making it a geological marvel. The three-hour round-trip to reach it will also introduce you to Litlanesfoss waterfall, which tumbles amongst some beautiful hexagonal basalt columns.
Other natural attractions are within easy driving distance. Hallormstadaskogar, the largest forest in the country, is 12 miles (19 kilometers) away. Here, you can embark on plenty of hiking and biking trails to enjoy the beautiful flora and birdlife. Traveling 37 miles (60 kilometers) takes you to Mount Snaefell, the tallest freestanding peak in the country.
However, the east of Iceland is best known for its incredible fjords. The closest of these is Seydisfjordur, a spectacular bay with sheer mountains and a charming village, 42 miles (68 kilometers) away. From this hidden gem, you can wind up and down the coast, marveling over some of the country’s best views. Wildlife is also abundant in the area, with seals, reindeer, foxes, and even whales seen regularly.
The closest major settlement to Hengifoss Guesthouse is Egilsstadir, the largest town in the region, 26 miles (42 kilometers) north. You can find shops, restaurants, and all the services a traveler could require. You can also use the town as a base to embark on a range of thrilling trips and adventures, as most tour operators in the region start their excursions here.
