Description
Hotel Egilsen is a wonderful place to stay in the largest town of Iceland’s Snaefellsnes Peninsula, Stykkisholmur. With a fantastic location, chic rooms, modern amenities like fast Wifi, and a welcoming atmosphere, travellers exploring this magnificent part of west Iceland will greatly appreciate their stay here.
Location & Nearby
Hotel Egilsen sits on the northern shore of the Snaefellsnes Peninsula, a region nicknamed ‘Iceland in Miniature’ due to the sheer diversity of its incredible sites. This places it close to attractions such as Bjarnarhofn’s shark museum and Kirkjufell, a mountain so beautiful it featured on Game of Thrones.
The most famous attractions of the peninsula, however, are within the national park on its tip, which is named after its magnificent central glacier, Snaefellsjokull. This area can be reached in just an hour and a half, and boasts black sand beaches, lava fields, caves, fishing villages, geological monuments and a stunning coastline.
The southern shore of Snaefellsnes also has a wealth of sites, most of which, such as the seal-watching beach of Ytri Tunga and hamlet of Budir, take less than an hour to reach.
Stykkisholmur is a great town to be based in due to its fascinating fishing culture, wealth of history, and abundant amenities, with restaurants, grocery stores and tourist services. Furthermore, ferries connect from its harbour to the remote and spectacular Westfjords, a region few travellers are able to get to. Baldur ferry terminal to the Westfjords and Flatey is 300 m away, the town's three museums, restaurants and galleries are at the doorstep.
Facilities & Amenities
All of the rooms at Hotel Egilsen are comfortable, with traditional Icelandic furnishings and luxurious modern touches, like power showers in all the private bathrooms, fast Wifi and down duvets. Single rooms and standard doubles are excellent choices for solo travellers and couples, whereas superior rooms are larger (15 sq m) but still sleep two. Many of the rooms have magnificent views.
On the first floor of the hotel is a large, comfy lounge with a library, where all guests are welcome to relax. If you wish, you can opt into a breakfast here each morning. Hotel Egilsen is also home to a cosy bar. Free parking is available on site. The hotel is a family-run boutique hotel in an 1867 harbourside house (second-oldest building in town), opened as a hotel in 2012, with just 10 rooms and natural Coco-Mat beds. The whole hotel can be rented for groups and events, guests who write a story for the hotel's website get a discount, and its sister hotel is Hotel Karolina.
