Description
Make The Freezer Apartments – Kopatjorn & Brimnes your base on the western tip of the Snaefellsnes Peninsula, with two self-contained units in the fishing village of Hellissandur. Snaefellsjokull National Park is just minutes away, while a buffet breakfast adds convenience before a day of sightseeing. The apartments are ideal for couples and pairs of friends who want a quiet, independent stay while exploring the peninsula by car.
Location & Nearby
The apartments sit on Utnesvegur in Hellissandur, a small fishing village on the north coast of the Snaefellsnes Peninsula in West Iceland. The village lies between the Atlantic coast and Snaefellsjokull, giving guests easy access to both the shoreline and the surrounding national park. Reykjavik is 124 miles (200 kilometers) away, roughly a 2.5-hour drive.
The property also has a long connection to Hellissandur's fishing heritage. The building dates to 1932, when it was constructed as the village ice house and used by the local fishing fleet. Over the years, it has served several purposes, including storage and a horse stable, before later becoming a space for artists, workshops, and exhibitions.
Hellissandur is small but has places to eat within a 10-minute walk of the apartments. For additional services, Olafsvik is 6 miles (10 kilometers) east, with grocery stores, gas stations, and a wider choice of restaurants and cafes.
The western Snaefellsnes Peninsula's natural attractions are within easy reach. Snaefellsjokull National Park begins just outside the village, putting its lava fields, coastline, and views of the glacier-capped volcano within a short drive. Svodufoss Waterfall is about 2 miles (3.5 kilometers) away, while Skardsvik Beach, known for its unusual golden sand, is around 4 miles (6 kilometers) away.
Kirkjufell Mountain, one of Snaefellsnes' most recognizable landmarks, is about 21 miles (33 kilometers) east, roughly a 30-minute drive. The relatively remote setting and limited light pollution around Hellissandur can also provide good conditions for seeing the northern lights on clear, active nights during the darker months.
Facilities & Amenities
The property has two apartment types. The Studio Apartment is 30 square meters and sleeps two, with one large double bed, a sitting area, and a window looking out over the village and the coast. The One-Bedroom Apartment with Ocean View is 45 square meters, also for two, with a separate bedroom and water views from the living space.
Each unit has its own private bathroom with a shower. Both apartments are fully self-contained, so you are not sharing facilities with other guests or waiting your turn in the morning.
Every apartment comes with a private kitchenette, set up for simple cooking and morning coffee at home. That helps out here, where the nearest supermarket is a short drive away and evenings are quiet. A dryer on site takes care of wet hiking gear and rain jackets.
There is a garden where you can sit out through the long summer evenings. The land around Hellissandur is flat and open, so nothing blocks the view north over the water, and on clear winter nights, you can watch for the aurora from just outside your door.
Buffet breakfast is included in the rate, and free WiFi and free private parking on site come as standard.
Both apartments are non-smoking and pets are not allowed. Cots are free for children under two, and extra beds can be arranged for older children on request.
