Description
Hotel Aldan is a fantastic choice of accommodation in the mystical village of Seydisfjordur in east Iceland. Spread over three buildings and thus offering a range of rooms and apartments, it has something for all travellers to this remote part of the country.
Location & Nearby
Seydisfjordur is one of Iceland's most beautiful villages, looking out on a sparkling fjord of the same name and surrounded by dramatic mountains. Hotel Aldan thus has a magical location for travellers to the Eastfjords or those embarking on a Ring Road trip around the country. In the village, guests can visit the Blue Church, the Tvísöngur sound sculpture, the Skaftfell art centre and the swimming hall with hot tubs and a sauna, and the Smyril Line ferry terminal is just 500 m from Hotel Snaefell.
In spite of its far-flung location, the town of Egilsstadir, which is the largest in the region and its centre of tourism, is just half an hour away, though the road over Fjarðarheiði can close in winter weather. The Stafdalur ski area is 9 km away, and the hotel offers ski storage. Furthermore, all of the area's most iconic attractions are within easy driving distance for those spending a night or more at the hotel.
Borgarfjordur Eystri, a spectacular fjord region to the north, can be reached in 70 minutes; Djupivogur, meanwhile, a coastal town with an abundance of culture, can be accessed in an hour and three quarters. Even far-flung sites, such as the country's tallest freestanding mountain, Snaefell, are only two hours away.
Facilities & Amenities
Hotel Aldan is the collective name for three lovely buildings. Hotel Aldan proper has deluxe rooms, with rich furnishings and plenty of space; Hotel Snaefell has a more eclectic range of comfy rooms; and the Old House has two large, modern apartments. All of the single rooms have private bathrooms with showers and tea and coffee facilities, whereas the apartments have washing and drying machines in the bathrooms, full kitchens and luxurious living areas.
Those booking a room will find single, double, triple and quad options available, making them great for solo travellers, couples and families alike. The apartments can comfortably accommodate six people each. All three buildings have access to fast Wifi.
Hotel Aldan is also home to a restaurant named Aldan, open roughly from May to October, where you can wine and dine, enjoying a range of Nordic dishes and drinks. Guests can also enjoy the seasonal Norð Austur Sushi & Bar, ranked third in Iceland by the White Guide, which reopens in June. Breakfast can be booked at reception for a fee, and the ground floor of Hotel Snaefell has an honesty bar and a shared guest kitchen with an oven, fridge and freezer but no stove. Free parking for all guests.
