Summary
Description
Slow down at Bergistangi Guest House, a small guesthouse at the end of the road in Nordurfjordur, on the Strandir coast of the Westfjords. Rooms look out over the fjord, the kitchen is yours to use, and the nearest crowd is a long drive away. It is ideal for road trippers and solo travelers who want quiet.
Location & Nearby
Bergistangi Guest House stands on the shore at Nordurfjordur, in Arneshreppur, the northernmost municipality of the Westfjords. Road 643 ends a few minutes past the guesthouse, so nothing passes through here. Mountains drop straight into the fjord on both sides.
This is remote country, and you should arrive stocked. Nordurfjordur has a small general store and a fuel pump, but the nearest town with a supermarket, a pharmacy, a bank, and a choice of restaurants is Holmavik, about 60 miles (96 kilometers) south along the coast road.
Fill your tank and your cooler before you turn north. The drive in is long, partly gravel, and worth doing in daylight. Gjogur Airport, which handles a small scheduled service, is about 11 miles (17 kilometers) back down the road.
Krossneslaug Geothermal Pool is about 1 mile (2 kilometers) up the coast, a hot pool built right at the edge of the sea. The abandoned herring factory at Djupavik is about 22 miles (36 kilometers) south, and hiking routes into the Hornstrandir Nature Reserve start from this stretch of coast. In summer, the light barely leaves.
Facilities & Amenities
The guesthouse has three room types, all with two twin beds: a Standard Twin Room with Sea View, a Standard Twin Room, and a Small Twin Room. Rooms are simple, clean, and warm, with heating throughout and views of the fjord or the hillside behind.
Bathrooms are shared between guests and have a shower. Towels are provided, and the house stays quiet enough that the arrangement rarely causes a wait.
The shared kitchen is fully equipped, so you can cook with what you brought in. There is a refrigerator, a microwave, a coffee machine, an electric kettle, and a full set of kitchenware, plus a dining area where guests tend to end up swapping road notes.
The terrace and patio face the water. On a clear evening you get the fjord, the mountains opposite, and very little sound. In winter, the lack of any light pollution makes this one of the easier places in Iceland to watch for the northern lights.
Free private parking is available on site, and the guesthouse is non-smoking throughout. Pets are welcome at no extra charge. Cribs and extra beds are not available, so this suits couples, pairs of friends, and solo travelers more than families with small children.
