Description
This small-group tour combines the Golden Circle and the South Coast of Iceland with Jokulsarlon Glacier Lagoon, where icebergs share the water with seals and birds.
The tour starts with the Golden Circle and Thingvellir National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, where you see moss-covered lava landscapes and a large freshwater lake. From there, you head to the Geysir Geothermal Area, where Strokkur Geyser shows the power of the geothermal activity in Iceland by shooting water into the air.
Next is Gullfoss Waterfall, one of the largest waterfalls in Iceland, which drops in two tiers into a canyon. The day ends at Seljalandsfoss Waterfall, where you can walk behind the falling water.
On the second day, you continue along the South Coast to Skogafoss Waterfall, which drops 197 feet (60 meters) and creates mist and spray, with rainbows on sunny days. A staircase leads up the side of the waterfall to a viewing platform at the top.
Also on the second day, you go hiking on a glacier. Certified glacier guides help you put on your safety gear, and you hike on the ice for an hour and a half.
On the final day, you explore Jokulsarlon Glacier Lagoon and Diamond Beach across the road, where icebergs lie on the black sand like diamonds. You may see seals swimming among the icebergs, so keep your camera ready.
From Jokulsarlon Glacier Lagoon, a super jeep takes you to the glacier, and after a short hike, you enter a natural ice cave and learn how it formed.
On the way back to Reykjavik, you stop at Reynisfjara Black Sand Beach, where Atlantic waves hit the coastline and basalt column cliffs. Keep your distance from the water, because the waves are dangerous and can catch you by surprise. In summer, this area and the nearby cliffs of Dyrholaey Peninsula are good for bird watching, and puffins nest in the cliffs from June to August.
