Description

Discover the beauty of one of Iceland's most captivating sightseeing routes on this small group day tour of the Diamond Circle. This nine-hour adventure takes guests to Diamond Circle's many attractions on board a 4x4 vehicle.

The action starts when a friendly local guide picks you up from your Akureyri accommodation. Alternatively, you can book a pick-up at the Lake Myvatn area. You'll then ride a comfortable 4x4 vehicle that can safely take you along the celebrated tourist route and its must-see attractions.

The Diamond Circle is a 155-mile (250-kilometer) circuit often compared to the more famous Golden Circle. However, the Diamond Circle offers a distinct charm, featuring dramatic landscapes, waterfalls, geothermal areas, and wildlife.

As your Diamond Circle adventure begins, you'll drive along Eyjafjordur, Iceland's longest fjord. Stretching over 47 miles (70 kilometers), Eyjafjordur is known for its stunning scenery. You'll see majestic mountains, which create a breathtaking backdrop for the fjord's deep blue waters. Kerling mountain, for example, is the highest you'll see, standing 5,046 feet (1,538 meters) tall.

The tour's first stop is Godafoss, one of Iceland's most iconic and historically significant waterfalls. The name "Goðafoss" means "Waterfall of the Gods." According to legend, after Iceland converted to Christianity, the law speaker Thorgeir Ljosvetningagodi threw his pagan idols into the falls as a symbolic gesture of the nation's transition to the new religion.

Godafoss waterfall features a horseshoe-shaped cascade that spans around 98 feet (30 meters) wide and drops about 39 feet (12 meters). You can walk toward the viewing platforms on both sides of the waterfall to further appreciate the breathtaking scenery.

Next, the guide will take you to Lake Myvatn to enjoy some of North Iceland's unique volcanic landscapes. Lake Myvatn was formed around 2,300 years ago by a volcanic eruption.

One of the highlights is the nearby Skutustadagigar pseudocraters, formed by steam explosions when lava flowed over wet ground. You can explore these craters up close via easy walking paths that offer scenic views of the lake and its surroundings.

Your next stop is the mighty Dettifoss waterfall. Known as Europe's most powerful waterfall, Dettifoss thunders with incredible force, dropping 144 feet (44 meters) and stretching 330 feet (100 meters) across. Check out the awe-inspiring mist and spray that often rises high into the air.

You may also visit Selfoss waterfall. While not as dramatic as Dettifoss, Selfoss has a distinct charm with its wide, horseshoe-shaped drop of around 36 feet (11 meters) and its width spanning approximately 330 feet (100 meters). You'll enjoy watching the water gently flowing over a series of basalt cliffs before merging into smaller streams.

You'll also explore Vatnajokull, Iceland's largest national park. Covering around 5,460 square miles (14,141 square kilometers), the park is dominated by Vatnajokull, the largest glacier in Europe.

You'll also stop at the Jokulsargljufur canyon, Hljodaklettar echo cliffs, Asbyrgi canyon, and the Tjornes peninsula cliffs. While in the Tjornes peninsula cliffs, you'll see Iceland's adorable puffins.

Your final stop is the charming town of Husavik, one of Europe's best places for whale-watching. While in Husavik, you can soak in the mineral-rich waters of the world-class GeoSea Geothermal Sea Baths.

At the end of the tour, head back to the 4x4 vehicle for the ride back to your hotel in Akureyri or at Lake Myvatn.
