Description

We have all heard of people living in caves hundreds and thousands of years ago; the cavemen of time long past. Ever wondered if modern people lived in caves? Because they did! Less than a century ago, a regular Icelandic family did live in a cave.

Laugavatnshellar caves are man-made caves, dug out of volcanic basaltic tuff. We're not sure who made them, but some speculate they have been there since the late 800's, housing the first settlers of this land. Lived in until 1921, the caves had been left empty, but now we have renovated the cave, restoring it to the cosy, homely glow they should carry, all in a historically correct fashion!

You can take a look inside their home in the cave to understand the simple means by which they lived and hear their story. Our guides will tell you all about why they lived there, about their passion for this place, their love for each other and their relation and interaction with the hidden people.

Our guides will transport you into a world of simplicity, extreme living conditions, passion, love and mythical beings; the world of The Cave People. By taking our 25 minutes long tour, you will join us on a journey through the lives of two families that made a life for themselves in a cave in the middle of nowhere in Iceland. Come and see, from their perspective, the troubles they faced and the happiness they felt during their time as Iceland's first, and last, cavepeople.

We are located in the middle of the Golden Circle, between Þingvellir National Park and Lake Laugarvatn. If you are looking to add some authentic experience to your Golden Circle tour, you should stop by at Laugarvatnshellar and join us for a tour. Before or after the tour you can sit down and enjoy a good cup of coffee and some traditional Icelandic cake, but in our humble opinion, we offer the best coffee on the Golden Circle.
