Daily itinerary

Day 1 - Welcome to Iceland!

Harpa Concert Hall sits against Faxaflói, the bay that sits opposite Reykjavík.

You'll land at Keflavík International Airport where you'll board a bus that will take you through the lunar-like landscapes of the Reykjanes Peninsula on your way to Iceland's capital, Reykjavík.

On the way to the city, you can opt to visit the restorative mineral-rich waters of the Blue Lagoon. Relax and unwind in this world-famous geothermal spa and prepare yourself for the journey ahead. Be sure to apply a silica mud mask and grab a drink from the lagoon bar for the full experience. This is a place you won't want to rush so take your time and enjoy.

After you settle into your hotel, you can spend the rest of the day exploring what the city has to offer. Be sure to walk around the old centre of town and visit the main shopping streets, the beautiful harbour area,  Harpa Concert Hall, and the impressive church, Hallgrímskirkja.

You can take advantage of the long days under the Midnight sun or have an early night in, the choice is yours.

Day 2 - The Golden Circle

The second site reached from Reykjavík on the popular Golden Circle trail is the geyser Strokkur.

Today you'll go on a day tour of the Golden Circle, consisting of the Gullfoss waterfall, Haukadalur geothermal area – the home of the Geysir, and the Þingvellir National Parliament Park, the first national park you'll visit, out of three. Due to its rich history, being where Icelandic parliament, the Alþingi, was founded in 930 AD, Þingvellir is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

It is also remarkable for its geology, as it sits above the meeting place of two tectonic plates. You'll be able to see the rifts in the ground, marking where the Eurasian plate and the American plate meet at the Silfra fissure. If you're looking for more exciting intercontinental fun, you could even opt for a snorkelling tour in the very same fissure!

Your next stop is the Haukadalur geothermal area. There, you'll find the Great Geysir himself - the geyser all others in the world are named after. The area is filled with other geothermal hot springs, geysers, and vents. The Great Geysir stopped regularly erupting a while back, but the geyser Strokkur that stands next to it erupts frequently and can reach up to 60 m (196 ft) with each blow.

The last stop on this day will be the grand waterfall Gullfoss. If conditions allow you'll be able to walk up close to the stunning waterfall Gullfoss and see how it stumbles down into the Hvítá glacial river canyon over a two-tiered fall of over thirty meters.

If you feel like adding more oomph to this already awesome day of wonders, how about adding a little activity at the end? You could head out from Gullfoss on horseback and get to know both the Icelandic horse and nature a little better or you could opt for a faster carrier on a snowmobile trip to the Langjökull glacier. The choice is yours.

Afterwards, you'll return to the city of Reykjavík, where you will spend the night. If you are still excited to keep experiencing the local flavour after you come back to the city, we offer many extra activities tailored to your desires - go ahead and create the Icelandic experience of your dreams!

Day 3 - Tour of the South Coast: There...

A chunk of ice that lays on the Diamond Beach is illuminated in the light of the midnight sun at its lowest point.

Today you'll start your journey along the beautiful South Coast of Iceland, going all the way to Vatnajökull National Park, the second national park that you'll cross on your trip.

On your way there you'll pass the stunning waterfalls Seljalandsfoss and Skógafoss, similar in height, but vastly different. The former is light and teasing, with an open grotto behind the cascading water which makes it possible to walk behind it for a unique point of view. The other waterfall, Skógafoss, is a plunging wall of water, powerful and absolutely stunning.

Those looking for a unique adventure on this day can add on a glacier hiking tour during the booking process. Suitable for all over the age of 8, this excursion will provide you with an insight into Icelandic glaciers as a trained guide will lead you across the icy plains of Sólheimajökull glacier where you'll enjoy incredible views of the South Coast.

You'll then continue towards the black sand beach of Reynisfjara where the impressive waves of the Atlantic Ocean hit the shoreline with an impressive force. Make sure you also keep an eye out for some adorable puffins while you are there.

You'll then continue on into Vantajökull National Park where you will spend the night.

Accommodation

Due to increased demand for travel services in Iceland and low availability, travel companies in Iceland can not guarantee specific accommodations. However, we can always provide you with the best available accommodation at the time of your booking. Below you can see our preferred partners for accommodation, Hótel Vatnajökull and Hótel Höfn. In the case of these hotels not being an option, an alternative of the same standard will be arranged.

Hótel Höfn

Standard private rooms with private bathroom in a 3-star hotel in the largest town in south-east Iceland. Breakfast is included.

Hotel Vatnajökull

Standard private rooms with private bathroom in a 3-star hotel close to Höfn. Breakfast is included.

Day 4 - On the South Coast: ...and back again

An adorable puffin at Dyrhólaey standing amongst a cluster of daisies.

Today, you'll wake up in the shadow of the great Vatnajökull glacier and you'll start the day by visiting one of Iceland's most breathtaking natural attractions: Jökulsárlón glacier lagoon. This deep and ever-expanding lagoon is filled with giant icebergs which have broken off a nearby glacier.

If you are visiting from May till October and you wish to get a closer look at these icebergs, you can opt for a boat tour on the lagoon. You'll board a calm amphibious boat where people of all ages can enjoy a relaxing sail among the giant bergs.

Close to the lagoon is a black beach where icebergs have broken to smaller pieces and scattered all over it, and when the sunlight hits them, they resemble chunks of diamonds - earning the beach the nickname 'Diamond Beach.

You will then start heading back towards Reykjavík, stopping at a few of your local guide's favourite locations and enjoying the view of the Westman Islands in the south, and the Mýrdalsjökull and Eyjafjallajökull glaciers in the north.

In the evening you'll return to Reykjavík, where you will spend the night.

Day 5 - Free day in Reykjavik or Snæfellsnes Peninsula

From a jagged mountain peak on the Snæfellsnes Peninsula, a charming stream runs through a field of moss.

On this day you can choose to spend the day free roaming the lovely streets of Reykjavik for some Nordic culture, shopping, and bar hopping.

Or you can choose to pack your hats and mittens and go on a day tour of the west of Iceland, to the beautiful Snæfellsnes peninsula. The crown of Snæfellsnes peninsula is Snæfellsjökull glacial volcano, made famous by Jules Verne's classic novel 'Journey to the Centre of the Earth' as the entry point to the Earth's mysterious core.

Surrounding this glacier is a lava field, covered in moss and containing a lot of caves. Snæfellsjökull National Park is the only national park in Iceland connected to the sea, and the cliffs along the sea are truly spectacular. The cliffs are easily viewable from the tiny towns of Hellnar and Arnarstapi.

During your trip, you'll also visit the beautiful Djúpalónssandur pebbly beach and nearby cove, see some small waterfalls and visit the famous mountain Kirkjufell near the Grundarfjörður town, which is a popular photography location due to the striking image of the mountain reflected in the nearby pool.

After a day out you will return to Reykjavík, for your last night in Iceland.

Day 6 - Reykjavík - Departure

A beautiful humpback whale thrusts its enormous body clear from the waters of Faxaflói Bay.

All good things come to an end, and sadly, this is the end of your tour. Before you go, and if your flight leaves in the afternoon, you can choose to go on a whale watching tour from the old harbour in downtown Reykjavík. The boat would take you out on Faxaflói bay so you'll get a view of the city from the sea as well - a great farewell! You can also catch up on some last-minute shopping before hopping onto your airport transfer shuttle.

Of course, you don't HAVE to go! You can always stay a day longer and have some more adventures with us! You could use your extra day to take a helicopter ride or a riding tour, hit the mountains on ATVs and go lava caving, or go big and enter a volcano, heading 100 m (328 ft) below ground into the massive magma chamber of Þríhnúkagígur!

If you prefer it cool, you could also take glacier trips and enter the tunnels and halls below the Langjökull glacier, or just laze around the city and enjoy all Reykjavík has to offer. If you want to extend your tour, we'll just move your airport transfer to the following day and let you enjoy your holiday a bit longer. An extra day is well worth it!

Beautiful country and landscapes. So many amazing and varied things to see. Knowledgeable and very friendly guides. Highly recommend!

Iceland is a beautiful country. If you are a nature lover on the cold side, then this is right place for you. The 1st 2 nights, I stayed at Eyja Goldsmeden hotel which is a comfort hotel, but it feels and looks like a 5 stars hotel. My 3rd night, I stayed in Nice travel hostel surrounded by nature and waterfalls. The 2 day Jokulsarlon tour was the highlight of my trip. The tour guide Mika from Nice travel was the best. He would go the extra mile, very considerate, humble and knowledgeable. My last 2 nights, I stayed at Fosshotel Baron . Unfortunately, this is one of the worst hotel that I have stayed in my life! Old and cheap. Only hotel where the water smells bad, worn out floorings and restroom that gets flooded and slippery. It’s like a 3rd world hotel! Guide to Iceland failed me on this.

Josef was wonderful in helping to coordinate our group trip. He was always quick to respond to my (many!) questions, and he was flexible in accommodating the needs of our group of 8 travelers. The hotels and tour companies he booked for us were very professional and made travelling a breeze. We had an amazing adventure and wouldn't hesitate to use Guide to Iceland for future visits to this spectacular country.

Orri our guide was fabulous and gave us great stories the entire trip. The hotels we stayed at Skuggi and Storm were wonderful with great breakfast and super staff. The luggage storage at both was very helpful. We had one tour cancelled because of weather but Guide to Iceland quickly found us other things to do. Totally successful vacation. We love Iceland and its people!!!! Everyone is so nice and helpful!

I looked at numerous packages and tour companies and am very glad I went with GuidetoIceland. Natan planned everything out perfectly for my wife and I so the trip was seemless. We were picked up at our hotel every day and fit in a lot within the 6 days we were there. Thor was our tour guide for the golden circle and was very informative & funny. Siggy took us on our 2 day southcoast tour and was very thorough in ensuring we did our glacier hike safely and had fun doing it. For our peninsula tour we had Matti who was also very knowledgeable about the area and was very personable. Overall the whole trip was great and I would highly recommend it!

I had a wonderful time in Iceland! Booking the 5 day summer package made everything so easy and worry free. My guides and the staff at the hotels and airports and bus stops were all super nice and helpful. I forgot to bring the printed out packet with the vouchers with me and they were nice enough to print it for me at city hall. Also, when I lost that packet, the locals were nice enough to let me use my mobile version. Most of the buses had wifi. I was particularly impressed with my 2-day south coast tour with Troll expeditions, Harpa was an amazing tour guide! The sights were breathtaking and I feel like we packed in a lot of the southern and eastern sights of Iceland into only 4 full tour days. I definitely want to come back and see Iceland in the winter and maybe see the northern areas that I didn't get to see yet. My only complaint was the glacier hike with Troll expeditions- I felt like we were rushed along and didnt get to really stop and take in the sights. It was also billed as a "walk" and I am a decently fit 27 year old and my wife is as well and it felt more like a climb and we were breathing pretty heavy towards the top. I feel like my group in particular was pretty rushed and were treating it like a race. My wife felt rushed and I think that is how she slipped and rolled on her ankle. Luckily the boots protected her ankle but she got some nasty blisters and couldn't walk much on our last day. Her crampons also came off twice during the hike. Our last day was with a particularly nice polish tour guide - Borris? He along with the other tour guides went out of their way to take us to extra stops and give us the best experience we could fit into a single day. The food was amazing and the city of Reykjavik was adorable and really fun to walk around. Loved Eyja Guldsmeden hotel - they let us store our luggage several times when we had to check out to travel to other parts of the island or to the airport. It was gorgeous and eco friendly and the staff was amazing. One thing I would stress to travellers - bring lots of healthy snacks from home like nuts and dried fruit since we didn't have much time for lunch most days with all the sight seeing and hiking and you get hungry! We did stop a lot for snacks but snacks from home are much cheaper and you will have them ready to go when you need them.
