Description
Travel by super jeep into the Icelandic Highlands to Askja Caldera, Viti Crater, and Holuhraun Lava Field on this small-group day tour from Lake Myvatn in North Iceland. The tour has a flexible schedule, and your local guide focuses on the geology, history, and nature of the area.
The tour departs from the Lake Myvatn area, where you meet your guide and head into the Highlands, with their wide-open spaces, lava fields, and freshwater springs.
The first main stop is Herdubreidarlindir Oasis, a group of freshwater springs at the edge of the vast Odadahraun Lava Field, known as "the last water before the lava field." You can join a guided walk to the shelter of the legendary outlaw Fjalla-Eyvindur from 1775, or relax by the stream and enjoy the quiet of the Highlands.
Along the way, you also see Hrossaborg Crater and Gljufrasmidur Waterfall.
The main stop of the day is Askja Caldera. Your guide picks the best weather window for the hike, which is 1.6 miles (2.5 kilometers) each way from the parking area to Viti Crater and takes 35 to 45 minutes one way. In a normal summer, part of the hike is on snow until early or mid-July. You usually spend 2.5 to 3.5 hours at Askja Caldera.
In late summer, you can walk down to the water at Viti Crater, which is slightly warm at 64 to 75 degrees Fahrenheit (18 to 24 degrees Celsius), and take a swim if you feel adventurous. You can also walk along the caldera.
Later, you stop for a picnic lunch at Dreki Mountain Hut near Drekagil Gully. The tour also takes you to Holuhraun Lava Field, formed in the 2014 eruption, and across the Dyngjusandur Desert.
