Description

Join this tour to explore the Borgarfjordur area in depth with a knowledgeable and experienced guide.

In Borgarfjordur you will be surrounded by beautiful nature and fascinating stories. Waterfalls, hot springs, and history are what you can expect to explore on this trip.

On the way to Borgarfjordur, you will enjoy a journey through the countryside. You will pass farms, fields, and rivers, so it's quite likely you'll get to see Icelandic horses along the way.

First, you will visit Hraunfossar, a beautiful waterfall where an underground spring emerges from the lava rocks to join the Hvita river.

We will also see Barnafoss (Children's Waterfall) nearby. Legend has it that this waterfall was named in memory of two children who fell into the river and drowned long ago.

From there, you will continue to the powerful hot spring Deildartunguhver. It has the highest flow rate of any hot spring in Europe (180L per sec) and the water is around 206° Fahrenheit (97° Celsius).

If you like, your guide can also take you to the geothermal baths at Krauma Spa. Krauma offers relaxing natural geothermal pools, a cold tub, saunas, and a relaxation room where you can unwind beside a cozy wood-burning stove.

Next you'll head to Snorrastofa museum in Reykholt to learn about Snorri Sturluson, one of Iceland's most famous authors and historians. You'll also visit both a modern church and the Snorralaug hot spring, which is the oldest man-made construction in Iceland and is protected by the National Museum.

On the way back, you will stop at Landnamssetrid, the Settlement Center, in Borgarnes. The Settlement Center recreates the earliest days in Iceland. There you will learn about one of the best-known heroes of the Icelandic Sagas, Egill Skalla-Grimsson. Egill was a renowned viking and successful farmer. He was a very fierce fighter, and he killed his first person when he was only six or seven years old. He was also a remarkable poet, and according to the Sagas, he was already composing poetry as a toddler!

There is also a cozy little restaurant where you can enjoy a nice cup of coffee and take a stroll around the souvenir shop.

We are keen to ensure that your experience of Borgarfjordur is tailored to your interests. Your guide is happy to offer extra stops or alter plans to suit your wishes.
