Description

Explore an ice cave in the Vatnajokull glacier in the early morning by booking this incredible guided excursion. Those eager to enjoy a unique experience in Iceland without the tourist crowds should book this small-group tour now.

Your tour begins when you meet your guide and the other guests at the Jokulsarlon glacier lagoon parking lot. This excursion is a small-group tour, so you'll have plenty of opportunities to ask your guide questions. They're a local expert with fantastic knowledge of glaciers and ice caves.

You'll meet early, at about 8 a.m., to ensure you have plenty of time in the ice cave before other tour groups arrive.

You'll climb aboard a super jeep, a specially modified vehicle with four-wheel drive, and your guide will drive you to the glacier. It's a bumpy journey along an unmade road, but the vehicle you're traveling in has been specially adapted for Iceland's challenging terrain — it's great fun.

Your guide will tell you more about the area and its history on the way while you sit back and enjoy the beautiful scenery surrounding you.

When you arrive at the ice cave, your guide will give you a thorough safety briefing and all the equipment you need for ice caving. The gear includes crampons, an ice axe, a harness, and a helmet with a head torch. You can also rent hiking boots if you don't have any suitable ones.

When ready, you'll begin the 30-minute hike to the glacier's edge. The hike is an easy walk on flat, slightly rocky ground. Anyone with a reasonable fitness level should be able to complete it, and you can take your time.

The ice-caving tour takes place in a stunning sapphire ice cave. The ice is constantly melting and reforming, and the shape, size, and location of the cave change, so each ice-caving experience is unique.

Ice caving is an incredible experience. The crystal-blue walls and beautiful ice formations feel otherworldly. As you're there early, you might even see the sunrise if the weather is clear.

As your guide leads you around the ice cave, they will photograph you. They will professionally edit these photographs and send them to you within 14 days of the tour. Each person will receive five photos, and these will be a mixture of portrait and landscape shots. These are excellent souvenirs of your trip to Iceland.

You'll spend around an hour in the cave while your guide tells you how it was formed. At the end of the tour, they'll drive you back to the parking lot, where you can continue your Icelandic adventure.

Don't miss the incredible experience of exploring an ice cave before the crowds arrive. Check availability now by choosing a date.

Good to know

Arriving at an ice cave early never guarantees that you will be the only group there, but it gives you a better chance of having fewer people in the cave — most companies don't operate until 9 a.m. or later.

Your photos are sent to you edited up to 14 days after your tour via a downloadable drive.
