Description

Get ready to conquer Iceland’s frozen landscapes on this 4-hour ice climbing tour on Falljokull Glacier from Skaftafell. Learn how to scale blue ice walls with guidance from certified glacier experts and take home professional photos of your adventure.

This tour is ideal for climbers seeking a safe and thrilling way to experience ice climbing in Iceland. With a certified glacier guide, professional photographer, and small group setting, you’ll enjoy a relaxed and supportive experience on the ice.

The tour begins at the Skaftafell parking lot in Vatnajokull National Park, where you’ll meet your English-speaking guide and professional photographer. Look for the tour operator's 4×4 vehicle in the lot, which is clearly marked and easy to spot.

Be sure to arrive at least 15 minutes before your scheduled departure time. The tour departs on time, and since there are no restroom facilities at the glacier, we recommend using the facilities at the meeting point before departure.

After introductions, you’ll board a modified 4×4 built for Iceland’s rugged terrain to Falljokull Glacier. As you travel, you’ll see mossy lava fields, glacier valleys, and expansive views of the surrounding mountains.

Soon, the route turns onto a rugged F-road that crosses ancient glacier plains. This leg of the journey takes around 20–30 minutes, and your guide will share stories about the region’s natural and geological history along the way.

At the glacier base, all necessary gear will be handed out, including crampons, ice axe, helmet, and harness. If you’ve rented hiking boots in advance, those will be provided at this point.

Once everyone is ready, the group sets off on a 30-minute hike across mostly flat but rocky terrain. The pace is relaxed and adjusted to the group, with clear views of the surrounding glacier landscape as you move toward the ice.

When you reach the glacier, your guide will help you gear up and demonstrate how to walk with crampons. A short safety briefing will follow and explain essential techniques for safe movement on the ice and proper use of your equipment.

You’ll begin the glacier hike toward the climbing area, where features like moulins, crevasses, and compressed blue ice reveal the glacier’s dynamic nature. These formations form through meltwater and the movement of ice.

Once at the climbing site, your guide will introduce you to the basics of ice climbing. You’ll start with a mellow wall to practice a technique called front-pointing, which is ideal for building confidence.

As you become more comfortable, the guide will lead you to more challenging climbing spots suited to your ability and interest. Each route is selected to match your progress and ensure a safe, enjoyable experience.

While you're on the ice, a professional photographer will capture five high-quality images per person. The photo package includes action shots, portraits, group photos, and glacier landscapes. All images are edited and delivered via Drive within 14 days.

After climbing, you’ll hike back to the 4×4 and return to the Skaftafell parking lot. The drive back offers a final chance to enjoy the glacial scenery and reflect on your adventure.

Experience the thrill of your first ice climb with this climbing tour on Falljokull Glacier from Skaftafell. Step onto the ice, scale stunning blue walls, and take home unforgettable memories. Check availability now by choosing a date.
