Description

Enjoy a magical winter experience in Iceland by booking this exciting 3-hour ice caving tour in the Breidamerkurjokull Glacier. This popular ice cave tour departing from Jokulsarlon Glacier Lagoon offers a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to explore frozen caverns and ride a custom-built super jeep guided by local experts.

The world-famous Jokulsarlon Glacier Lagoon is high on the bucket list for many travelers to Iceland. If you plan to visit this otherworldly landscape during your vacation, don't miss the opportunity to experience the thrill of ice caving while you're there.

Your journey starts by meeting your guide and boarding one of Iceland’s largest custom-made super jeeps. Your group will depart from the Jokulsarlon Glacier Lagoon and drive approximately 40 minutes toward Breidamerkurjokull, a glacial tongue extending from Vatnajokull, the largest ice cap in Europe.

Along the way, your guide will share fascinating insights about the formation of ice caves, glaciers, volcanoes, and local culture. Feel free to ask questions if you’re curious about anything you see.

The ice caves in your trip are 100% natural, constantly forming and changing with the seasons and weather conditions. As such, the specific cave your group will explore will depend on the conditions on the day of your tour.

You may find yourself at the edge of the glacier, or you might need to hike a short distance of 0.3 to 0.4 miles (0.5 to 0.7 kilometers) on the glacier to reach the cave. The walking distance on the tour varies between 0.6 and 2.5 miles (1 and 4 kilometers), so all participants should be in good health and comfortable with walking.

Before entering the cave, your guide will provide a safety briefing and equip you with helmets, crampons, or micro spikes if needed. Each tour is unique due to the ever-changing nature of the glaciers and caves.

You’ll witness a variety of stunning ice formations and colors, from brilliant blue to emerald green and even striking black ice. Guests of this guided experience often find the diverse ice formations and colors the most unforgettable part of this ice caving adventure.

During your 40-minute cave tour, you'll make at least two stops, allowing you to appreciate the diversity of this natural wonder. The ice formations are just as spectacular, from perfectly arranged icicles to silky smooth walls.

Ice caving is only possible to do safely in the depths of winter, and the cave is checked for safety before you arrive. All you need to do is marvel at the unique beauty of the cave, a magnificent sight to behold.

After your ice-cave visit, you'll return to the super jeep to enjoy the journey back to Jokulsarlon.

Ensure you allow an hour or two before or after this tour to explore the Jokulsarlon Glacier Lagoon. The ever-changing landscape is filled with giant icebergs and is home to many seals.

Don't miss this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to explore an ice cave in the Breidamerkurjokull Glacier, part of the extensive Vatnajokull National Park. Check availability now by choosing a date.
