Explore the volcanic landscapes and waterfalls of North Iceland on this guided Diamond Circle tour from Akureyri.
You're picked up in the morning in Akureyri, the largest town in North Iceland. Your first stop is Godafoss Waterfall, the Waterfall of the Gods. It's said that a chieftain threw his statues of the Norse gods into the falls when Iceland converted to Christianity in the year 1000.
Godafoss Waterfall is about 98 feet (30 meters) wide and drops about 39 feet (12 meters).
Next, you visit the Lake Myvatn area, where you see the boiling mud pools near Namafjall Mountain. You also stop briefly at Viti Crater, next to Krafla Volcano.
After the Lake Myvatn area, you continue to Dettifoss Waterfall, about 148 feet (45 meters) high and 328 feet (100 meters) wide, where the muddy glacial water pours into a canyon.
From Dettifoss Waterfall, you follow Jokulsargljufur Canyon to Vesturdalur Valley and the echoing cliffs of Hljodaklettar, known for their basalt rock formations.
The next stop is the horseshoe-shaped Asbyrgi Canyon. According to legend, it was formed when Sleipnir, the horse of the Norse god Odin, put one hoof down here.
You then stop at a cafe in Husavik Town before returning to Akureyri.
