Description

Explore one of Iceland's most amazing natural wonders on this 3-hour adventure tour into a stunning Ice Cave within Vatnajökull National Park.

Perfect for travelers eager to witness a natural attraction unlike anything else, this tour offers a truly unique experience and is one of the most popular activities in Iceland, so early booking is highly recommended to secure your spot.

This is the original ice cave tour, known for taking visitors to the best spots every day based on conditions and ensuring the most breathtaking experience.

Your journey begins at one of Iceland’s most iconic destinations, Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon, a serene lake filled with towering icebergs. From the car park, you’ll meet your expert guide and board a super jeep for a fun ride to Breiðamerkurjökull, one of the prominent glacier tongues of Vatnajökull, the largest glacier in Europe.

The monster truck ride from the lagoon into the rugged wilderness of Vatnajökull National Park takes around 30 to 40 minutes, offering panoramic views of Iceland’s dramatic landscapes.

Upon arriving at the glacier, your guide will equip you with all necessary safety gear, including a helmet, microspikes and a headlamp when needed, before leading you on the walk to the cave entrance. This approach takes approximately 30 to 40 minutes each way across mostly flat terrain, with the exact time depending on conditions and the pace of your group. An extension to the access road is expected to be completed in November 2026, which will make the walk substantially shorter.

Waiting at the end of it is the mesmerizing Crystal Ice Cave, known this season as Verðandi, set at the edge of Breiðamerkurjökull near the calving face at Jökulsárlón. This massive black-and-blue ice cave is larger and deeper than last year's, with exceptionally high ceilings, deep passages tunnelling beneath the glacier, a distinctive heart-shaped chamber and gigantic natural arches at its entrance. It's a photographer's dream, with its striking blue and dark ice and otherworldly beauty providing countless opportunities for breathtaking shots.

After approximately 30 to 45 minutes of exploring this natural masterpiece, you’ll hop back into the super jeep for a scenic return journey to Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon.

On booking, you have the option of upgrading this tour to an Extended Glacier Experience, which adds an extra hour higher up on the glacier. Alongside your visit to the Crystal Ice Cave, you'll spend around 30 minutes hiking on the surface of Vatnajökull and 30 minutes exploring spectacular crystal-blue crevasses, moulins and other natural ice formations with your expert guide. This season's crevasses are a guest favourite and can appear even bluer than the ice cave itself. The upgrade extends the total tour length to 4 hours.

No matter which option you choose, this unforgettable experience combines the thrill of adventure with the chance to witness one of Iceland's most extraordinary attractions up close.

Due to the popularity of this tour, it’s likely to sell out quickly. Don’t miss your chance to explore the magical Crystal Ice Cave in Vatnajokull Glacier.

Good to know

Driving from Reykjavik to Jokulsarlon glacier lagoon takes at least 5 hours. The journey offers some amazing attractions, so we advise travelers to arrive the day before the tour so they can explore them along the way. Jeans are not recommended for glacier activities, but warm, layered clothes are.

By upgrading to an Extended Glacier Experience, you will add an extra hour on the glacier, with around 30 minutes of glacier hiking and 30 minutes exploring crystal-blue crevasses and moulins. This extends the total tour length to 4 hours, allowing you to witness a stunning ice cave and glacier formations up close in one trip.

The meeting point is the commercial bus parking area at Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon. Look for the large Guide to Iceland sign, about 15 metres directly south of the public restrooms. Parking at the lagoon is paid. Please arrive 15 minutes before departure and use the restrooms beforehand, as there are none on the glacier.

The minimum age is 8 years, and guests should be comfortable walking for at least an hour in total. Waterproof hiking shoes are a good idea, as the ground can be muddy after heavy rain.
