Walk right up to the edge of Solheimajokull Glacier on this 2-hour introductory glacier walk on Iceland's South Coast. This easy, guide-led glacier tour suits families, first-time visitors, and anyone who wants to stand face to face with the ice without crampons or previous experience.
Solheimajokull is a tongue of Myrdalsjokull, Iceland's fourth largest ice cap, and it sits close enough to the Ring Road that the detour takes only a few minutes. That position makes it a natural stop on any South Coast drive, and the short tour length means you can fit it around waterfalls and black sand beaches on the same day.
You meet your guide in the parking lot at Solheimajokull, roughly 2 hours and 20 minutes east of Reykjavik and about 19 miles (31 km) from Vik. From there, the group follows a mostly flat gravel path alongside a glacial river, past the lagoon that has formed at the glacier's snout. The round trip covers about 1.6 to 1.9 miles (2.5 to 3 kilometers).
Your certified glacier guide sets the pace and fills the walk with context. You learn how Solheimajokull carved this valley, why the lagoon in front of you did not exist a few decades ago, and what the dark ash bands in the ice say about Iceland's volcanic past. Questions are welcome throughout.
At the glacier edge, you get a close look at ridges of blue ice, crevasses, and layers of ash pressed between seasons of snowfall. The lagoon below reaches depths of around 200 feet (60 meters). Nobody steps onto the ice on this tour, so you can concentrate on the view rather than on your footing.
Partway through, the group pauses beside the water for hot chocolate or coffee with cookies. It is a small touch that turns a short walk into a proper outing. It also gives you time for photographs while your guide answers whatever the walk has prompted.
Helmets and walking poles are provided. Dress in warm waterproof layers and wear sturdy walking shoes, since the gravel underfoot is uneven and Icelandic weather shifts quickly. The route is not wheelchair accessible, and parking at the site is paid separately on arrival.
The tour runs all year and suits beginners, families, and anyone who wants a glacier up close without committing to a full day on the ice.
