Your driver-guide picks you up at your accommodation anywhere in the Capital Area or at your cruise terminal. You travel in a private sedan for 1 to 3 guests or a private van for up to 8, and you decide how long to stay at each stop.
Your first stop is Thingvellir National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, where you walk through the rift valley between the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates. Iceland's first parliament met here in the open air more than 1,000 years ago. In the park, you also visit Oxararfoss Waterfall, where the Oxara River tumbles down black lava cliffs.
On the way to Geysir, you stop at a field of Icelandic horses, which often come over to the fence to say hello.
At the Geysir Geothermal Area in Haukadalur Valley, steam drifts across the paths, mud pots bubble, and Strokkur Geyser erupts every 4 to 16 minutes. You also see the Great Geysir, which rarely erupts today but gave its name to geysers around the world.
Next is Gullfoss Waterfall, where the Hvita River drops in two stages into a deep canyon. On sunny days, the spray often creates rainbows, and you have time to explore the viewpoints at your own pace.
The last stop is Kerid Crater, where red volcanic rock surrounds a lake. You can walk around the rim or follow the path down toward the water.
Throughout the day, your driver-guide shares stories, legends, and practical tips about the history, culture, and landscape of Iceland. At the end of the tour, you're dropped off where you were picked up.
