The Golden Circle is a classic sightseeing route to some of the best-known places in Iceland, such as the Geysir Geothermal Area and Gullfoss Waterfall. This small-group minibus tour suits travelers who want to spend a full day exploring and learning about the country.
The tour starts with pickup in Reykjavik. From there, you travel through mountains, lava fields, and glacial rivers, passing geothermal plants steaming in the distance. Along the way, your guide tells you about the country, its people, and its culture.
Your first stop is Thingvellir National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. You walk through the rift between the Eurasian and North American tectonic plates, in the place where Iceland's parliament, the Althing, was founded in 930 AD. It is one of the oldest parliaments in the world.
Next, you visit Bruarfoss Waterfall, known for its turquoise water tumbling over dark lava rocks surrounded by moss.
From there, you continue to the Geysir Geothermal Area, with boiling mud pools and steaming hot springs. Strokkur Geyser erupts every 4 to 16 minutes and usually shoots water 49 to 66 feet (15 to 20 meters) into the air.
The journey then takes you to Gullfoss Waterfall, where the Hvita River drops 105 feet (32 meters) in two tiers into a canyon. In the right weather, you may see rainbows over the falls. This is also a stop for lunch and souvenirs at your own expense.
Your last stop is Kerid Crater, a red volcanic crater with a lake at the bottom. You can walk around the rim or go down to the water.
After the last stop, you drive back to Reykjavik, which takes about 60 minutes, and are dropped off at your accommodation or the nearest bus stop.
