Golden Circle & Secret Lagoon

Experience the extent of Iceland’s earthly delights on this day tour of the Golden Circle, complete with a soak in the mineral-rich waters of the Secret Lagoon at Flúðir. This is a tour for anyone looking to satisfy their senses with all of which Icelandic nature has to offer.

After getting picked up from designated locations in Reykjavík City, you will make your way south to the first attraction belonging to the Golden Circle, Þingvellir National Park.

The area is both historically, culturally and geologically fascinating, being located on the boundary between the two tectonic plates of North America and Eurasia. This beautiful rift valley offers a unique landscape of volcanic lava fields, and Iceland’s very first Parliament was established there in 930 AD.

Your second stop will be at the geothermal valley Haukadalur, to behold the two famous geysers of Geysir and Strokkur, the latter of which still erupts every 10-15 minutes. Then it is onwards to Gullfoss Waterfall, the number one attraction of the country.

This magnificent waterfall of uninhibited power is protected by the state as a natural treasure, and all former plans to harness its energy for generating electricity have thankfully been revoked. If you observe the stone memorial above the waterfall, you’ll see a depiction of the woman who threatened to throw herself down the falls for their protection.

You will additionally visit the lesser-known Faxi Waterfall, located about twelve kilometres from Gullfoss, that runs from the salmon-inhabited river Tungufljót. This addition to the tour is a particular treat since these dazzling falls are often forgotten on the popular route.

After such an adventurous day of sightseeing, you will be treated to a visit to the natural hot springs at the Secret Lagoon, located in the green village Flúðir in Hrunamannahreppur. The thermal pool has been carefully modified to accommodate its ever-increasing number of visitors, while still preserving its natural terrain.

Soaking in the warm waters of the hot spring not only nurtures your body, for you will also be surrounded by the spectacular view of a geothermal valley, complete with the minuscule eruption of a small geyser every few minutes.

After a stop at a local restaurant for evening dining, the tour concludes with a visit to Kerið, a 3.000-year-old volcanic caldera in the Grímsnes area. Kerið boasts of a diverse colour display, with red volcanic rocks contrasted by glistening green moss and the aqua-blue water that nestles in the bottom of the crater.
