Soak in four geothermal hot tubs with glacier and mountain views by booking this admission ticket to the Hoffell Baths in Southeast Iceland. This relaxing bathing site near Hofn suits Ring Road travelers, families, and anyone who wants warm water and quiet scenery without booking a full spa day.
Your ticket covers general admission for one person to the whole site, which means the four outdoor tubs, the sauna, the changing rooms, and the shower area. Reserving ahead secures your slot at a small bathing site that fills quickly in summer, and it is an easy way to break up a long driving day on Route 1 and the southern coast of Iceland.
The tubs look straight up the valley toward Hoffellsjokull Glacier, an outlet tongue of Vatnajokull Glacier that sits about 2 miles (3 kilometers) away. On a clear day, the ice fills the view while you lie back in the water, and the mountains behind the site block much of the wind that reaches this coast.
From September through April, the same wide and unlit sky makes this one of the better places in the region to watch for the northern lights. No streetlights sit anywhere near the valley, so you need only a clear night and enough solar activity for the aurora to appear overhead.
A sauna stands beside the tubs and gives you somewhere to warm through between dips, which matters on the colder and windier days the southeast coast gets for much of the year. The small bar serves drinks you can carry straight into the water, and the changing rooms have hooks and showers.
The baths opened in 2000 as a place for people in Hornafjordur to unwind after work, and they have grown slowly since. A family-run guesthouse next door still runs the site, so the feel stays closer to a village pool than a resort spa. Most guests stay an hour or two.
Opening hours move with the season. From May through September the baths run from 10:00 to 21:00, and in October, November, February, March and April they run from 12:00 to 21:00. The last booking each day is at 19:00, and the baths close for December and January.
Hoffell lies about 2 miles (3 kilometers) off Route 1 and about 12 miles (19 kilometers) from Hofn, the harbor town known for its langoustine and a practical base if you want to stay nearby. Jokulsarlon Glacier Lagoon sits further west along the same road. Park at the site and walk a few steps to the changing rooms.
Leave the car behind and spend an unhurried hour in the warm water of the Hoffell Baths with a glacier filling the valley in front of you. Check availability now by choosing a date.
