Combine the classic Icelandic experiences of sightseeing around the Golden Circle and bathing in geothermally heated waters at the Secret Lagoon. This tour should not be missed by those seeking an authentic Icelandic adventure.

You will be picked up in Reykjavík in a minibus in the morning, and start the sightseeing component of the excursion. Your first destination is Þingvellir, a National Park and UNESCO World Heritage Site, located directly between the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates.

The continental movement means that the park is filled with lava fields and torn with ravines, making for some beautiful landscapes. As you walk through the area, you’ll no doubt be awed by the geology. The history here is also fascinating; Þingvellir was the original site of what is now the longest-running parliament ever, formed in 930 AD.

After a pleasant amble, you’ll return to the minibus and head to the geothermal Haukadalur valley. This hilly area is dotted with hot springs and fumaroles, but what it is most renowned for is its geysers. The largest, Geysir, gave all others in the world their name, while Strokkur is very active, shooting water up into the sky every five to ten minutes.

Finally, you will head to the majestic waterfall Gullfoss. The sheer power of the falls is mesmerising, and its history is inspiring; only because of the incredible endurance and energy of a 19th Century Icelandic farmer was it not turned into a hydroelectric dam. There is information on the story of this inspirational woman on the site.

Once you have thoroughly enjoyed all three sites of the Golden Circle, you will no doubt want to relax. Thankfully, the Secret Lagoon in the village of Flúðir is next on the agenda.

The lagoon is Iceland’s oldest swimming pool, filled with water trickling in from an adjacent geothermal area, which, as an added bonus, has another geyser. Its location could not be more serene, and you will no doubt ease away any tension built up over your holiday in its healing waters.

Once you are fully recharged, you will hop back into your minivan and return to Reykjavík.

Don’t miss out on this tour for a perfect combination of sightseeing and relaxation. Check availability by choosing a date.

Reviews

Trund, our tour guide, could not have been better. He had an amazing knowledge of Iceland history, a wonderful sense of humor, a considerate love of the land, helpful tips about our stay, and a beautiful singing voice as he serenaded us through the country side. The ride was safe and quick, and the tour took us to the most breathtaking locations. No negative comments! I strongly recommend this tour.

Having gone on a large tour with another organization, I really appreciated the flexibility and attention offered by a smaller group. Björn's knowledge and humor really were the icing on the cake of this fantastic introduction the beauty of Iceland by way of the Golden Circle. I was grateful that some stops were timed to avoid large crowds as much as possible. We were able to thoroughly enjoy each location without feeling rushed, enjoy a lovely lunch at a wonderful family bakery, and make it back to our hotels at a decent hour.

This small-group tour was wonderful. Pick-up was prompt and without hassle. Our guide and driver, Einar, was lovely and full of knowledge. He took us to many extra little stops along the way, and was quite patient with us, never stressing for time or rushing us along--just very laid-back and calm, and always cracking jokes, which set the tone for the whole tour. The sights themselves are magnificent and speak for themselves; the Secret Lagoon was a perfect finale to a spectacular day, I'd definitely recommend a tour with a hot bath at the end. Some things to note: the mini-bus was a bit cramped for some of the larger guests, and there is not much overhead room for storing your bag (I had my backpack between my legs), so if you like your tour bus roomy and want to bring a big day bag, you might be uncomfortable. The stop for lunch offers a variety of options for food, but they're all extremely high-priced if you're on a budget; I'd recommend packing your own lunch and some snacks if you're trying to be careful with your spending money. Otherwise, it's simply a fantastic tour!

This was an excellent trip. It was a nice small group in a comfortable minibus, the sites were stunning, and Bjork, our guide was wonderful. The geysers were amazing and probably my favourite part. Oh that and the impromptu stop to pet some Icelandic Horses that we passed on the way (so cute and mischievous, they have such personality). The stop at the Secret Lagoon was very nice too and that along with the small bus size is the reason why I picked this tour. One thing to keep in mind is that there are no chargers in the seats on this bus like the big buses, but just bring a portable one, since it's a fair trade off for being in a nice small group. Thanks Gateway to Iceland and Bjork!! -Emma S
