Set out on an incredible four-hour horseback riding and hot-spring bathing experience to the Reykjadalur hot springs with this fantastic small-group tour. This meet-on-location adventure is perfect for those eager to see beautiful Icelandic landscapes from a unique and exciting new perspective.
The journey begins when you meet your experienced local guides at the stables near Reykjadalur in Southwest Iceland. This location is an easy drive from Reykjavik. Once your small group is gathered, they will provide all the equipment needed for a safe and comfortable trip, brief you on the route, and introduce you to your horse.
Icelandic horses are a unique breed due to the country's geographic isolation and have developed into friendly, intelligent, sturdy creatures suited to navigating harsh landscapes. You’ll be paired with a horse that matches your size and experience before setting out into Reykjadalur valley.
Reykjadalur is renowned for its geothermal activity. As you trot through the area, you can expect to see hissing steam vents, bubbling mud pools, and smoking hot springs.
The mountain paths you take will also provide magnificent views of the surrounding area, allowing you to marvel over the quaint village of Hveragerdi, rolling hills, and a stunning coastline. With clear weather, you may even see the Westman Islands in the distance.
The guides will provide historical background and stories about these landscapes to enrich your trip. Feel free to ask them any questions along the way.
Eventually, you’ll reach your hot spring bathing spot, where you’ll dismount to bask in geothermal waters surrounded by nature. The only things you need to remember for this tour (other than a camera or fully charged phone) is your swimsuit and towel.
It's best to wear your bathing suit under your clothes as there are no changing rooms at Reykjadalur. The untouched landscape ensures that your time in the water will be even more beautiful, as you’ll have panoramic views of the surrounding countryside!
Depending on conditions, the bathing spot will usually be in a river fed by hot springs. This means you can go upstream for a warmer soak or downstream for slightly cooler waters.
Most of the river is very shallow, so even less confident swimmers can enjoy the experience.
During this downtime, you can take photos with your group, and your guide will provide some light refreshments.
After a beautiful dip in Iceland’s hot springs, you’ll get dressed and return to your horse. The return journey to the stables provides even more incredible views.
