Set off on a thrilling six-hour blue ice cave and super jeep tour in Vatnajokull glacier that starts from the iconic Jokulsarlon glacier lagoon. This experience is perfect for adventure seekers looking for a breathtaking glacier experience on Europe’s largest ice cap.
Your adventure begins at the iconic Jokulsarlon glacier lagoon, a world-renowned gem nestled within Vatnajokull National Park. Here, massive icebergs float gracefully across a vibrant aquamarine lagoon. Admire the tranquil, otherworldly atmosphere of this natural wonder as you prepare for the incredible activity ahead.
At the lagoon meeting point, your expert driver-guide will welcome you and lead you to a custom-built super jeep specially designed to handle Iceland's challenging terrain. From there, your guide will take you on an exhilarating 30 to 40-minute ride to the glacier access area at Breiðamerkurjökull, an outlet glacier of Vatnajokull.
As the super jeep navigates through this breathtaking landscape, you’ll be treated to panoramic views of this colossal glacier, which covers over 3,088 square miles (8,000 square kilometers), Europe's largest glacier and one of Iceland’s iconic natural landmarks.
When the jeep reaches the glacier, it’s time to gear up for the next phase of the adventure, the exciting glacier hike. Your guide will provide all necessary safety equipment, including glacier crampons, helmets, harnesses and headlamps, and offer a short safety briefing on how to hike the glacier safely.
The glacier hike is moderate in difficulty, with around 2.5 to 3 hours of active hiking that takes you about 2.5 kilometres up Breiðamerkurjökull on a gentle incline. No prior glacier hiking experience is required, and it is well worth the effort, as it provides a unique chance to see the impressive glacier up close and experience the awe of being surrounded by pristine, white ice.
During your glacier walk, your expert local guide will share fascinating insights into the fascinating facts behind glaciers, from their formation to their constant evolution.
Along the way, the true magic of the tour begins. You’ll typically explore 3 to 4 separate ice caves and glacier features, spending around 20 to 40 minutes at each, with your guide choosing the best route on the day.
This season’s highlights are the newly discovered Goose and Iceman ice tunnels and moulins farther up the glacier, narrow, winding passages of exceptionally vivid crystal-blue ice that have quickly become guest favourites. You’ll also visit the Crystal Ice Cave, known this season as Verðandi, a huge black-and-blue ice cave with high ceilings, deep passages, giant arches and a heart-shaped chamber.
Inside, you’ll be greeted by walls of shimmering aquamarine and sapphire colors, along with intricate ice sculptures created by melting and refreezing of the ice.
This natural masterpiece offers endless opportunities for incredible pictures, so make sure your camera is fully charged to capture every moment of its surreal beauty.
Once you’ve explored the caves, you’ll return to the super jeep for a scenic ride back to Jokulsarlon glacier lagoon, where your incredible six-hour adventure concludes.
This tour combines thrilling activities, stunning landscapes, and unique experiences, making it an essential part of any visit to Iceland.
