Step into a quieter side of Iceland’s glacier landscapes with this ice floating experience at Fjallsarlon Glacier Lagoon within Vatnajokull National Park. This small-group glacier tour offers a calm and unique way for travelers to connect with Iceland’s nature while surrounded by drifting icebergs and ice caps.
Fjallsarlon is known for its still waters and fewer crowds compared to other glacier lagoons in Iceland. Floating here allows you to slow down and take in the setting from a different perspective.
Your 1.5-hour experience begins at the boathouse near the lagoon, where you’ll meet your guide and receive an introduction to the activity. This area is located in Southeast Iceland, just off the Ring Road and roughly a 5-hour drive from Reykjavik.
You’ll be fitted with a thermal immersion suit designed to keep you warm, dry, and buoyant in the cold water. Once ready, a short walk brings you to the edge of the lagoon for a safety briefing and instructions on how to move comfortably in the water.
Entering the lagoon is gradual and guided, so you can adjust to the sensation step by step. Once afloat, the immersion suit supports your body for a weightless feeling as you drift among the ice.
For around 30 minutes or depending on the lagoon conditions, you’ll remain in the water under the supervision of your guide. They will ensure both safety and comfort throughout the experience. Feel free to ask them questions or for assistance if needed.
The quiet surroundings, the movement of the water, and the presence of the glacier create a setting that feels both still and dynamic at the same time. It’s an activity that appeals to those looking for something different from traditional sightseeing.
Floating at Fjallsarlon is quite easy and not physically demanding, but participants should be in good physical and mental health. They should also be able to follow instructions and be comfortable moving independently in the water.
Depending on the season, evening departures may offer the chance to experience the lagoon under changing light conditions. In winter, there is even the possibility of seeing the northern lights above the glacier.
After the session, you’ll return to the boathouse to change out of your gear and warm up indoors. Hot drinks such as tea or hot chocolate are provided for your comfort.
The tour operates in small groups of up to eight participants for a more personal and attentive experience. Your guide stays close at all times to provide support and share insights about the glacier lagoon and its surroundings.
Please note that participation requirements apply for safety reasons. Guests must be between 4'11" and 6'11" (150 to 210 centimeters) in height and weigh no more than 243 pounds (110 kilograms). The minimum age is 18 years, and the maximum age is 65 years.
