Discover the underwater world of Silfra canyon on this once-in-a-lifetime snorkelling tour. The canyon lies between the North American and Eurasian Tectonic plates, that are drifting apart, tearing up the landscape around in the process.
You can expect visibility to reach up to 100 metres because the clear water comes from a glacier called Langjökull who keeps the water temperature a cool 2-4°C all year round.
Snorkelling in Silfra is a unique experience, and you'll get the chance to look into another world while floating in the clear, blue water. You'll witness the awesome powers of Mother Earth as she rips the landscape around apart.
Silfra is located in Þingvellir National Park. The park itself is a rift valley in between the North American and the Eurasian tectonic plate. It is the only place is the world where you can snorkel in between two tectonic plates. The plates are drifting apart by 1-2 cm a year, making the rift valley and Silfra a little wider each year.
Silfra and Þingvellir are located in a big lava field. When snorkelling in Silfra, you will see lava rocks along both sides of the fissure and also underneath you. The volcanic landscape is apparent wherever you turn.
Silfra consists of 4 different parts, all to be explored during the Silfra snorkelling tour. We enter Silfra in the “big crack”; where the crystal clear blue water reaches a depth of 30 meters.
We then slowly make our way to the Silfra “Hall”, where the fissure widens and lets a lot of light into the water, reaching underneath the surface.
Next part of exploring is the mighty “Cathedral”. There you'll really get the feeling of floating between two tectonic plates as you'll get a clear view of the Icelandic lava field at the bottom of the canyon.
Last but not least we are entering the Silfra “lagoon”. The lagoon is about 140 meters across, and when looking underneath the surface, you can just about see all the way to the other side. That's how incredibly clear the water is!
