Set off on a private glacier adventure in Iceland that combines a thrilling 4x4 ride with guided glacier adventure and real scientific exploration. You'll traverse dramatic canyons and rugged terrain before reaching a remote glacier that few visitors ever get to see.
Your 10-hour adventure begins with a pickup in Hvolsvollur, South Iceland, where you’ll meet your expert local guide and board a powerful 4x4 vehicle. You’ll journey takes you into the heart of Thorsmork, one of Iceland’s most scenic and remote highland areas.
Ride along rugged mountain tracks and ford glacier-fed rivers as you pass colorful rhyolite hills, volcanic rock formations, and quiet valleys shaped by ancient glaciers. With no crowds around, you may possibly spot wild birds, arctic fox tracks, and striking geological features preserved by Iceland’s remote terrain.
After the drive, follow your guide on a moderate 1 to 1.5-hour trek through a hidden canyon. Along the way, you pass layered rock formations, braided rivers, mossy cliffs, and black volcanic sands, completely undisturbed and photogenic from every angle.
At the end of the canyon, you’ll see Krossarjokull Glacier, a remote outlet glacier surrounded by silence and stark volcanic terrain. After a short safety briefing, you gear up and step onto the ice to explore deep crevasses and layers of dead ice shaped over centuries.
Krossarjokull is a small outlet glacier that flows from the larger Myrdalsjokull Glacier in South Iceland. Less visited than the country’s more famous ice caps, it offers a quieter, more remote experience for travelers seeking a peaceful glacier hike in Iceland away from the crowds.
With your guide’s help, you become a Citizen Scientist for the day. You’ll help map the glacier and collect real data that contributes to environmental research. It’s an unforgettable chance to connect with nature while supporting efforts to understand and protect glaciers in Iceland.
After glacier hiking in Krossarjokull, you can sit down to enjoy the packed lunch you brought with sweeping views of the surrounding ice and mountains.
With no crowds nearby, it’s a quiet moment to enjoy the scenery. Your guide shares insights into Krossarjokull’s formation and its role within Katla Geopark, tying together the day’s experience.
At the end of the tour, you’ll receive a Citizen Scientist certificate from Katla Geopark, recognizing your participation in glacier research and environmental monitoring. It’s a unique takeaway that highlights your role in supporting sustainability and glacier conservation in one of Iceland’s most remote regions.
With a private experience, you get personal attention from your guide. You’re free to ask questions, pause for photos, and truly connect with the nature around you.
