Summary
Description
Discover the beautiful Myvatn lake and Godafoss waterfall on this small-group tour. If you want to go sightseeing in some of North Iceland's stunning locations with pick-up from Akureyri town, then this tour is for you. You'll even see your favorite Game of Thrones sites up close!
First, your professional guide will pick you up at your preferred location in Akureyri. Then, you'll depart at around 09:00 and drive along Eyjafjordur toward your first destination.
The journey will take about 41 minutes, but the stunning views you'll see along the way will make you forget the time.
You'll marvel at seeing the Eyjafjordur fjord, surrounded by verdant hills and mountains on both sides, until you arrive at your first stop, the magnificent Godafoss waterfall.
This godly waterfall is fed by the Skjalfandafljot river, which flows along a 7,000-year-old lava field.
Interestingly, Godafoss translates to "waterfall of the gods." Legend has it that a Viking law speaker once threw his pagan statues in the waterfall to symbolize the country's conversion to Christianity.
Next is the stunning Myvatn lake.
This volcanic lake was formed 2,300 years ago and is one of Iceland's most visited natural attractions for its serene water, breathtaking landscapes, and abundant birdlife.
You'll also visit the Skutustadagigar pseudocraters, Hverarond and Namaskard natural steam vents, Grjotagja rift, Grjotagja cave, Namafjall mountain, Hverir mud pools, Dimmuborgir lava fields, Myvatn Nature Baths, and the Game of Thrones filming locations in Hofdi recreational area.
The Skutustadagígar pseudocraters are rootless craters formed by fiery hot magma flowing over the surrounding wetland. At the same time, Grjotagja is a long-splitting rift, as seen from above, but once you descend from it, it'll lead you to an ethereal cave filled with geothermal hot water.
Hverarond and Namaskard natural steam vents will amaze you with their many unique colors. You'll also explore the foot of the Namafjall mountain, where Hverir hot springs are found. Here you'll witness steam rising from the Earth's surface into various fumaroles, mud pools, and mud pots.
You'll venture around the Dimmuborgir lava fields. Also known as the Black Fortress, this area is steeped in folklore, piquing the interest of travelers worldwide.
Next, you'll visit the famous Myvatn Nature Baths. Although admission tickets to the lagoon are not included in this tour, you may purchase them separately and relax in the lagoon's milky-blue water.
Finally, if you're an avid fan of the Game of Thrones series, you'll love a tour of Hofdi, the actual location of the "North of the Wall." Prepare your camera and take many photos to show your friends back home!
After seven to nine hours of adventure, your tour guide will drive you back to Akureyri town, where you can rest and refresh yourself.
