Description
Explore the less-visited north of Iceland on this 4x4 tour from Akureyri. North Iceland has many of the same geothermal features, waterfalls, rivers, valleys, and hiking trails as the South Coast, but it is often overlooked.
You see the Lake Myvatn area from a 4x4 jeep or van that can handle rough terrain. You can be picked up from your accommodation in Akureyri on request, and you drive along Eyjafjordur, the longest fjord in Iceland, surrounded by mountains and hills.
Your first stop is Godafoss Waterfall, the waterfall of the gods, which stretches across almost the entire width of the river. The spray often creates rainbows.
You continue to the Lake Myvatn wetlands, a reserve where thousands of birds nest each summer.
There are many geological features on the route, beginning with the Hverarond Geothermal Area near Namafjall Mountain. The ground here is so hot that you must stay on the marked paths.
Next, you visit Dettifoss Waterfall, one of the most powerful waterfalls in Europe.
On the way back, you explore Dimmuborgir Lava Field, with lava arches and caves formed by a volcanic eruption. Folklore says the Hidden People live here.
You also visit the Skutustadagigar Pseudocraters, a field of craters formed when lava flowed over the wetlands and exploded on contact with the water of the lake.
On your way back to Akureyri, the largest town in North Iceland, you stop at a viewpoint across the fjord from the town to take photos.
