Description
Leave the rough highland roads to someone else and ride a super jeep from Reykjavik to Landmannalaugar, with stops at Hekla Volcano, crater lakes, and three waterfalls along the way. This Landmannalaugar super jeep tour suits travelers who want to hike, bathe in a natural hot spring, and see the Highlands of Iceland in one day without driving the mountain tracks themselves.
The 11-hour tour runs in a small group of no more than 19 people, led by a driver-guide who knows the highland routes. You get about 3 hours in Landmannalaugar, which is enough time for a guided hike and a warm soak before the drive back.
Your day starts the easy way, with a pickup from your accommodation in Reykjavik from 8:30 AM, which can take up to 30 minutes. If you are staying farther east, you can join along the way in Hveragerdi at 9:20 AM, Selfoss at 9:30 AM, or Hella at 10:00 AM. The super jeep has free Wi-Fi on board, though the signal drops in parts of the Highlands.
Tours run from June to October, when the highland roads are open, and the snow has melted off the colorful mountains. Lunch is not included, so your guide stops at a local mini-market in Thjorsardalur Valley, where you can buy food for the day.
From there, the road heads toward Hekla Volcano, one of Iceland's most active volcanoes, which last erupted in 2000. You stop for photos over the black lava fields that spread out from its slopes.
Next is Frostastadavatn Lake, a turquoise lake ringed by rough lava and rounded hills. It sits just north of Landmannalaugar, so it gives you your first look at the colors of the area.
Landmannalaugar lies about 112 miles (180 kilometers) from Reykjavik, inside the Fjallabak Nature Reserve. Its rhyolite mountains are streaked with red, yellow, green, and blue, right beside the black, glassy rock of Laugahraun Lava Field.
Here, you join a 2.8-mile (4.5-kilometer) hike of about 2 hours through the lava and up into the hills. Afterward, you can relax in the natural geothermal pool, where warm water flows out from under the lava.
On the way back, you take the Sigolduleid route and stop at Hnausapollur Crater, also called Blahylur, a round crater filled with deep blue water. Nearby, Sigoldugljufur Canyon, known as the Valley of Tears, has many small waterfalls running down its walls into a turquoise river.
Back in Thjorsardalur Valley, Haifoss Waterfall is one of the tallest waterfalls in Iceland, falling about 400 feet (122 meters) into a deep gorge. The super jeep handles the rough track to its viewpoint with ease.
Nearby, Gjain Gorge hides small waterfalls and streams between mossy banks and lava rock, a quiet spot for a short walk.
Your last stop is Hjalparfoss Waterfall, where two streams of the Fossa River drop over dark basalt columns into one pool. You then head back to Reykjavik, where the tour ends at your accommodation in the evening.
Join this Landmannalaugar super jeep tour from Reykjavik to hike colorful mountains, bathe in a hot spring, and see some of the best waterfalls in the Highlands in one day. Check availability now by choosing a date.
