Explore Lofthellir Cave, a permafrost ice cave inside a lava tube in North Iceland, on this small-group Super Jeep tour from Lake Myvatn.
The tour starts at the hotel near Lake Myvatn, where you meet your guide. The track to the cave is rough, so you travel in a modified Super Jeep for a safe and comfortable ride.
On the way, you drive past Hverfjall Volcano and along the Ludentarborgir Crater Row.
At the foot of Hvannfell Mountain, you hike to the entrance of the cave.
Your cave guide leads the group slowly and safely into the cave in single file. The entrance is the narrowest part, so you crawl on all fours for about 4 feet (1.2 meters), and there's a short slide halfway into the cave. With every step after that, the cave gets bigger.
Inside, you see ice formations, some of them hundreds of years old. There is ice and water on the cave floor, and the temperature stays around 28 to 32 degrees Fahrenheit (-2 to 0 degrees Celsius).
Lofthellir Cave is a protected site, privately owned by local landowners. Only a limited number of tours are allowed, all led by certified cave guides, to keep the tours sustainable and preserve the cave. Every ticket includes a fee for the protection program and the landowners.
The cave is also used for research, including a SETI-funded study that uses Lofthellir to better understand cave exploration on Mars.
After exploring the cave, you return to the meeting point.
