Northern Lights Tour from Reykjavik in an SUV

Northern Lights Tour from Reykjavik in an SUV
A beautiful, fairytale horizon in Iceland, created by the northern lights.
Northern lights are a fickle part of nature, and you never know how great a show you'll get until you are stood in a wintery Icelandic landscape watching them.
Iceland's coasts are stunning beneath the summer sun, but even better beneath the winter auroras.
Bodies of water inland, such as at this Icelandic lake, are great to watch the northern lights from, as they reflect magically in the surface.
Your SUV will wind you down dark trails in search of the best vantage point from which to watch the northern lights.
Ancient cultures had many explanations for the northern lights, such as them being messages between gods or the activities of restless spirits.

See the aurora borealis dancing over Iceland’s magical landscapes with this northern lights tour from Reykjavík. This excursion is perfect for those who want to see incredible natural wonders, but don’t want to be crowded with other guests.

This tour begins when you are picked up from Reykjavík in an SUV. The small size of this vehicle makes it perfect for families and groups of friends to enjoy the evening together without worrying about the needs of strangers.

You will set out from the capital, and head in whatever direction the lights are most likely to be seen. Your guide is an expert at locating them; they know the dark corners of the countryside where few others are likely to be heading, and will be following the cloud cover both by eye and using the weather website.

This means that you could head to many parts of the south or west to enjoy the lights, allowing you to get in some essential sightseeing by night. You may, for example, head to the lunar landscapes of the Reykjanes Peninsula; the historically and geologically fascinating Þingvellir national park; or to the black sands of the South Coast.

As soon as the lights start to appear, you’ll get out of the SUV to admire them. Most of the time, these beautiful lights are green, sometimes they can be purple, pink, red or blue, but they are always spectacular. Your guide will be on hand to help you photograph them.

Of course, as the aurora borealis are a natural phenomenon, there are no guarantees that they will show. If the tour does not set out as a viewing seems unlikely, or if it does and isn’t successful, you can arrange another attempt free of charge.

Witness a show of Iceland’s aurora far from the crowds with this northern lights tour. Check availability by choosing a date.
