Hekla Volcano has shaped the surrounding landscape through its many eruptions, and the sites on this tour give you a taste of the highlands without going deep into the interior.
You visit Gjain Valley in Thjorsardalur Valley, a small green oasis in the middle of a desert-like plain, with springs and small waterfalls running between lava formations.
In the neighboring valley, you see Haifoss Waterfall, one of the tallest waterfalls in Iceland, which drops into a deep canyon next to Granni Waterfall.
Other stops include Hjalparfoss Waterfall, a double waterfall surrounded by lava fields, and the ruins of the old Stong Farm, which was buried by an eruption of Hekla Volcano in the Middle Ages.
If the road is open, you also visit Sigoldugljufur Canyon, a gorge with dozens of small waterfalls.
