Description

Discover one of North Iceland's charming cities on this enriching Akureyri and Myvatn Nature Baths tour from Reykjavik. This 14-hour private adventure with photo souvenirs takes travelers to different must-see attractions, including a relaxing dip in a naturally heated outdoor pool.

The day begins when a friendly guide picks you up from your Reykjavik accommodation or a desired location in or around the Icelandic capital. You'll ride a luxury van that will take you to Akureyri.

Dubbed the "Capital of North Iceland." Akureyri is Iceland's second-largest urban area. Located at the head of Eyjafjordur fjord, Akureyri is known for its vibrant cultural scene, stunning natural beauty, and rich history.

Upon reaching Akureyri, your first stop is the Akureyri church, or Akureyrarkirkja, as locals would like to call it. Akureyrarkirkja is a Lutheran church designed by respected Icelandic architect Gudjon Samuelsson.

The church's location lets you enjoy breathtaking panoramic views of Akureyri and the Eyjafjordur fjord. When it comes to design, you'll see two symmetrical towers that reach skyward, making it a focal point of the town's skyline.

Your next stop is downtown Akureyri, where you'll experience the town's lively atmosphere. The guide will take you through streets with colorful buildings, boutique shops, restaurants, and cafes. As you explore the different establishments, you can buy some local souvenirs and taste authentic Icelandic food.

After enjoying downtown Akureyri, you'll head to the Laufas turf houses. Built between 1866 and 1870, the Laufas turf houses are a preserved rectory farm complex featuring unique construction techniques used by Icelanders for centuries.

The turf houses, with their thick walls of layered turf and stone, provide excellent insulation, keeping the interiors warm during the frigid winters and cool in the summer.

Your next destination is Jolahusid or the Akureyri Christmas House. Though it bears the name "Christmas," this shop and tourist attraction is open all year round. The Akureyri Christmas House features two floors filled with different Christmas stuff to buy.

You'll see Christmas-themed decorations, books, artwork, toys, and music. Most items you'll find are made locally, such as handicrafts and other artisan creations.

After filling your shopping bags with yuletide treats, your guide will take you to Godafoss, one of Iceland's most celebrated waterfalls. Also known as the "Waterfall of the Gods," Godafoss stretches around 100 feet (30 meters) wide and plunges 39 feet (12 meters) into a canyon.

After taking many pictures at Godafoss waterfall, you'll cap your Akureyri escape in the soothing waters of the Myvatn Nature Baths. Opened in 2004, the Myvatn Nature Baths feature a set of geothermal pools and steam baths centered around a big lagoon.

The pool's temperature ranges from 97 to 104 F (36 to 40 C), and the water is packed with minerals like sulfur, which may help improve skin and respiratory problems.

Take note that admission to the Myvatn Nature Baths is not included in the tour price. The duration of the tour may also change with its addition.

After a day of adventure and discovery, you'll return to your accommodation in Reykjavik.
