Your day in North Iceland begins with pickup in Akureyri or at Lake Myvatn. You pass glacial rivers, mountains, and lava fields on the way deep into the Highlands to the Askja volcanic area.
The first stop is Hrossaborg Crater, an explosion crater known as a filming location for the movie Oblivion.
Next, you visit Gljufrasmidur, meaning "canyon builder," on Jokulsa a Fjollum River. A short walk takes you to a waterfall and the river.
Herdubreid Mountain, a flat-topped volcano, is your next stop, where you can rest and take a short hike into a lava field. The area around Herdubreidarlindir Springs is one of the best-known wilderness areas in Iceland.
Then, you continue to Drekagil Canyon, or "Dragon's Gully," where you stop for lunch before walking into the ravine. If conditions allow, a hidden waterfall waits at the end of the walk.
Next, you arrive at the Vikraborgir parking area, the gateway to Askja Caldera. From there, you walk to Lake Askja through a lunar-like landscape.
You cross rivers and black sand deserts with small pockets of life in the bare terrain, see waterfalls and lava fields, and see Askja Caldera and Viti Crater.
At Viti Crater, you look down at its crater lake and across to Lake Askja. If conditions allow, you may be able to swim.
On the way back, you drive through Vatnajokull National Park, with several stops inside the park and views of Vatnajokull Glacier along the route.
The tour is reserved for your group only. At the end of the day, you are dropped off where you were picked up.
