Explore the Diamond Circle in North Iceland on this private tour with pickup in Akureyri or the Lake Myvatn area, visiting waterfalls, canyons, and a national park.
Your guide picks you up at your hotel, guesthouse, the airport, or the port. It's a private tour, so it's just you and your group, and you can spend more or less time at each stop depending on your interests.
You travel in a 4x4 vehicle. If you start in Akureyri, you drive along Eyjafjordur, the longest fjord in Iceland.
On departures from Akureyri, your first stop is Godafoss Waterfall, one of Iceland's most famous waterfalls. Its name means "waterfall of the gods." In the year 1000, when Iceland adopted Christianity, a chieftain is said to have thrown his pagan idols into the falls. The waterfall is about 39 feet (12 meters) high and 98 feet (30 meters) wide.
Next, you make photo stops around Lake Myvatn, known for its rich birdlife. The lake formed in a basaltic lava eruption about 2,300 years ago and is surrounded by lava fields, hot springs, and craters.
Then you visit Dettifoss Waterfall, one of the most powerful waterfalls in Europe, where water drops about 148 feet (45 meters) over an edge 328 feet (100 meters) wide. Just upstream is Selfoss Waterfall, smaller, with a drop of about 36 feet (11 meters). Both are in Vatnajokull National Park, which covers Vatnajokull Glacier, the largest ice cap in Europe, and its surroundings. The park also includes Jokulsargljufur Canyon, carved by huge floods from the glacier along the Jokulsa a Fjollum River. The canyon runs about 15 miles (25 kilometers) and is up to 394 feet (120 meters) deep.
Next, you visit the Hljodaklettar Echo Cliffs, known for their hexagonal basalt columns. You then continue to Asbyrgi Canyon, a horseshoe-shaped canyon near the Arctic coastline with walls about 330 feet (100 meters) high.
Your tour continues to the cliffs of Tjornes Peninsula, where puffins nest in summer, with a view over Oxarfjordur Bay.
The last stop is Husavik Village, famous for whale watching, where you can walk around the small boat harbor and find a restaurant or cafe. If your group wants to, you can add a visit to the GeoSea Geothermal Sea Baths, an infinity pool overlooking Skjalfandi Bay, at your own expense.
At the end of the tour, your guide takes you back to Akureyri or the Lake Myvatn area, or drops you off in Husavik.
