Add excitement to your adventure and enjoy the frozen wilderness of Skaftafell Nature Reserve with a private glacier hike in Iceland at Falljokull. This 3-hour experience takes you deep into Iceland’s frozen wilderness, offering a close-up encounter with Falljokull, also known as the “Falling Glacier.”
Designed for beginners and nature lovers, this tour combines hands-on adventure, comfort, and unforgettable views in one of the most scenic corners of Vatnajokull National Park.
Your adventure begins at Fosshotel Glacier Lagoon, a short drive from Skaftafell and right by the Ring Road. You’ll meet your certified glacier guide in the hotel’s parking lot. Arriving about 15 minutes early gives you time to grab a snack or use the restroom before setting out.
When you're ready, hop into a 4x4 super jeep. The ride to the glacier takes you through bumpy roads and beautiful views of snow-capped mountains and lava fields. With a driver taking care of the rough road, you can sit back, relax, and enjoy the landscape.
Soon, you’ll reach Falljokull, a glacier tongue flowing from the larger Vatnajokull Ice Cap. It's called the “falling glacier” because of how the ice flows steeply down from the mountain, creating a dramatic landscape.
Then, you’ll take a short, easy walk over rocky ground to get to the edge of the glacier. Your guide will hand out all the necessary equipment, including crampons, a helmet, a harness, and an ice axe. Warm layers and sturdy hiking boots are all you need. Rental options are available if you don’t have your own.
Don’t worry if you don’t have glacier hiking experience. Your guide explains how to use everything in simple steps, making it easy to feel confident and comfortable before the glacier hiking adventure.
Once you're geared up, begin your glacier hike on Falljokull’s striking landscape. You'll pass towering ice ridges, deep crevasses, and glowing blue ice that shifts with the light. Your guide keeps a steady, comfortable pace, so enjoy the ever-changing shapes around you. If the sky is clear, you might even see Iceland’s highest peak.
As you move across the ice, your guide will explain how glaciers form, how they’re changing due to climate change, and why they’re essential to Iceland’s environment.
While you're focused on the adventure, your guide takes photos of the experience. After the tour, you’ll receive five professionally edited pictures, so you can stay in the moment without worrying about your camera.
Since this is a private tour, you receive more personal attention from your guide, enjoy a less crowded experience, and have the opportunity to hike at your own pace. It’s easy to ask questions, learn about glaciers, or soak in the peaceful surroundings.
