Description

Get the adrenaline pumping and join this beautiful alpine rock climbing tour, not far from Iceland’s capital city, Reykjavík. This excursion is perfect for amateur and experienced climbers alike who would like to scale Iceland’s unique and fascinating rock formations.

Your adventure begins in Reykjavík where your guide and instructor will pick you up and drive you north towards Skessuhorn Mountain, which is sometimes called the Matterhorn of Iceland.

Mount Skessuhorn is a pyramid-shaped mountain located north of Reykjavík in Skarðdheiði mountain range. Skessuhorn rises 967-metres above sea level, and it is one of the most fun mountains to climb close to Reykjavík.

Once you reach the parking lot at the base of the route, your experienced climber guide will teach you how to use the climbing gear before starting the approach to the bottom of the mountain.

The approach takes 2.5 -3.5 hours, so you can also enjoy the grassy fields and canyons of the Icelandic countryside on the hike there. This approach is not flat, so it is recommended that you wear good hiking boots with ankle support.

After the approach, the group will stop to have some lunch and drinks and take in the beautiful views. After the lunch break, the fun begins! You’ll start gearing up for the climb ahead with a harness, helmet and other climbing gear.

Approaching the mountain from its south-west ridge, the climb itself is not hard, so it is suitable for most people that have some scrambling experience. The tour will be with a small group ensuring a personal and safe experience.

Climbing the North-west ridge takes 3-4 hours of scrambling and easy climbing. After you reach the summit, you will take a break to have some light refreshments and grab some photos of the stunning landscape.

On the way back you take the same route back down the ridge, or if preferred, it’s possible to take the normal hiking trail down the mountain; your guides will make this decision based on the preferences of the group and weather conditions. Once you have completed the descent, you will hike back to the car and be driven back to Reykjavík.

Scale one of Iceland’s most enjoyable climbing mountains and book this adventure tour today. Check availability by choosing a date.
