Daily itinerary

Day 1

Day 1 - Explore South Coast Waterfalls, Black Sand Beaches, and Coastlines

On the first day of your adventure, you’ll be picked up in the morning in Reykjavik at 9:00 AM. You’ll head to Iceland’s South Coast, a region known for its mighty waterfalls, world-renowned black sand beaches, and expansive glaciers.

Along the way, watch Iceland’s landscapes unfold, from rolling lava fields and moss-covered hills to farmhouses dotting the countryside.

Your first stop is Seljalandsfoss, a waterfall famous for the path that lets you walk behind the cascading water. The trail can be slippery, and the cool mist will spray your face, so waterproof clothing is recommended for an enjoyable visit.

Next, you’ll arrive at Skogafoss, situated near the Eyjafjallajokull Volcano. Feel the thunder of the water as you stand near its base, or climb around 500 steps for sweeping views from above. On clear days, you'll be treated to spectacular views of Myrdalsjokull Glacier.

Continue your South Coast trip to Reynisfjara Black Sand Beach, known for its hexagonal basalt columns, Halsanefshellir Cave, and the imposing Reynisdrangar Sea Stacks. Watch the crashing waves while staying at a safe distance, as they can be powerful and unpredictable.

Then, stop for lunch in a local cafe or a bistro. We will admire the Eldhraun Lava Fields on our way to the hotel for rest and dinner.

Tonight, you’ll unwind in a cozy, handpicked accommodation in Hof or a similar location in southeast Iceland. Relax and get ready for another day of South Coast adventure.

Your accommodation for the night is away from the city lights, your expert guide will be monitoring real-time weather and aurora forecasts to maximize your chance of a successful sighting during the aurora season. Please note that the northern lights are a natural phenomenon and sightings cannot be guaranteed. However, if they don’t appear on the first night, there will still be opportunities to chase the aurora borealis on the second night of the tour.

Day 2

Day 2 - Vatnajokull National Park and Jokulsarlon Glacier Lagoon

Start your day with a hearty breakfast at your hotel before setting out on another day of your South Coast tour. You’ll explore the icy wonders of Vatnajokull Glacier, one of Europe’s largest ice caps.

Begin at Jokulsarlon Glacier Lagoon, the crown jewel of Iceland. Its calm, blue glacial lake is filled with icebergs of all shapes and sizes that have broken away from the Breidamerkurjokull Glacier. This cinematic lagoon has appeared in films like The Secret Life of Walter Mitty and Batman Begins, so you may easily recognize it.

Between May and end of September, you have a chance to add an exciting optional activity to your tour: amphibian boat tour at Jokulsarlon Glacier Lagoon. Glide through the icy waters, float among towering icebergs, and watch for seals playing in their natural surroundings.

Nearby, visit Diamond Beach, where chunks of glacial ice wash onto the black sand beach. As sunlight reflects off the ice, the sparkling chunks look like scattered diamonds, especially at sunrise or sunset.

In winter, your adventure continues into a natural ice cave with your expert guide from the Jokulsarlon area. Carved by the glacier meltwater, these caves reveal glowing blue ice walls that shift and change each season. Step inside the glacier to admire crystal-like formations and softly lit blue chambers, creating a truly unique experience. During the summer months, we will visit the Katla Ice Cave. This Ice cave is near the charming town of Vik where we will have a lunch stop before visiting the ice cave.

Ice caving is suitable for beginners, as safety instructions will be provided before the tour. All necessary equipment is provided, including helmets and crampons.

Views of theSkaftafell Nature Reserve, a protected wilderness area in Iceland will be surrounding you on this day. With glacier-topped peaks, jagged mountain ranges, and peaceful walking paths, it offers incredible opportunities for dramatic nature photography.

On the journey back to Reykjavik, your guide will watch for the northern lights. If conditions are right, you’ll make a short stop to admire the aurora shimmering across the dark sky, creating a magical finale to your adventure.

You’ll arrive back in Reykjavik after a day filled with glacier landscapes, icy adventures, and northern lights hunts. The second day wraps up your South Coast tour in Iceland with experiences that stay with you long after the journey ends.

Good to know

This tour runs all year, though the itinerary can change a little depending on the weather. In winter, shorter daylight hours may mean spending slightly less time at some stops.

Please note that northern lights are a natural phenomenon, so sightings cannot be guaranteed. Your guide will monitor solar activity, weather, and cloud cover, taking you to the best viewing spots in South Iceland.

Iceland’s weather is unpredictable, so pack warm outdoor layers such as wool, fleece, or synthetic fabrics (avoid cotton). Warm jackets, hats, gloves, waterproof pants, and sturdy hiking shoes will keep you comfortable while exploring waterfalls, glaciers, and ice caves.

For solo travelers or groups with an odd number of participants, if you don’t select the single supplement, you’ll share a twin room with another guest of the same gender. This way, everyone stays comfortable while keeping the tour experience enjoyable.

Each traveler can bring one small day backpack and one larger piece of luggage up to 44 lbs (20 kilograms). Extra luggage can be safely stored at the tour operator’s office in Reykjavik for a small fee.
