Private Lake Myvatn Day Tour

The stunning and historical Goðafoss in winter.
Dettifoss is believed to be Europe's most powerful waterfall.
The drive between Akureyri and Lake Mývatn takes you through otherworldly areas of stunning beauty.
Akureyri is a town teeming with nightlife, culture and entertainment.
The water in Grjótagjá canyon is too warm for bathing these days.
One of the many mud pots that dot the otherworldly Námaskarð geothermal area.

Marvel over the diverse wonders of the lake Mývatn region on this private day tour. Where you go, and how long you spend at each destination, is all in your hands. This is a perfect excursion for those who seek to immerse themselves in Iceland's natural beauty, without having to worry about travelling on anybody else’s terms.

Your guide will pick you up from your Akureyri accommodation in the morning, and transport you to the Mývatn region. En route, you will pass the incredible Goðafoss waterfall, and stop to marvel at its power and learn about its fascinating history. After that, you will continue east, and what you see next is entirely in your own hands.

There are many fascinating places to visit in Mývatn. You can observe seething geothermal areas, such as at Mount Námafjall and Hverir, or bathe in naturally heated water in the Myvatn Nature Baths. Those interested in Iceland's raw volcanism would enjoy the lava fortress of Dimmuborgir and the pseudo-craters of Skútustaðagígar, and avid birdwatchers should spend some time at the lake itself to see a wealth of life.

How you choose to see these sites is up to you. You could leave it all in the hands of your guide, and get them to show you and tell you about as many places as possible, or you could fully invest in a couple of destinations and spend your day taking them in. If you are a fan of the HBO Series Game of Thrones, you could even tailor your tour to hit as many filming destinations as possible.

The only possible limitation on this tour is that some areas can become inaccessible in winter. While most places still can be reached, Mount Krafla and the Víti explosion crater are closed off in bad weather. There is still plenty in the area to entertain yourself with, however.

Once you have made the most of your day, you will head back to Akureyri.

Immerse yourself in the beauty of Lake Mývatn, and do so on your own terms. Check availability by choosing a date.
