Visit Studlagil Canyon and two waterfalls in East Iceland on this shore excursion from Seydisfjordur Port, timed to fit your cruise ship's docking window.
Your local guide meets you at the harbor in Seydisfjordur when you disembark. Seydisfjordur is a small town at the end of a long fjord, surrounded by steep mountains, with long ties to the fishing industry and a growing reputation as an arts hub.
From the port, you travel inland through quiet countryside, and your guide tells you about the region along the way.
Your first stop is Rjukandi Waterfall, a multi-tiered waterfall along the Ring Road (Route 1) near the town of Egilsstadir. Its name means "steaming," after the mist it creates. A short walk from the parking area takes you to views of the falls, surrounded by mossy cliffs.
Next, you head west to Studlagil Canyon, where the Jokulsa glacial river flows between walls of basalt columns up to 98 feet (30 meters) high. The full height of the columns was only revealed in 2009, when the opening of the Karahnjukar Dam lowered the river's high-water mark by 26 feet (8 meters).
You visit the west-side viewpoint of the canyon, where staircases lead down to a viewing platform overlooking the basalt columns and the turquoise river. The often-photographed view on the east side requires a hike of about 3 miles (5 kilometers) each way, so it isn't part of this tour.
On the way back east, you stop at Gufufoss Waterfall, the largest waterfall in Seydisfjordur Fjord. It looks like a smaller version of Skogafoss Waterfall in South Iceland and drops 88 feet (27 meters).
The tour ends back in Seydisfjordur, where you're dropped off at your ship. If you have time before you board, you can explore the town's rainbow-painted street.
