Embark on an adventure hiking across Myrdalsjokull glacier and tour the ice caves above Katla, one of Iceland's most explosive and active volcanoes. Anyone who wants an up-close look at ice caves and glaciers on an exciting adventure should book this tour today.
The tour begins in Vik, where your friendly driver will be waiting for you in a super jeep (though you can arrange pickup from Reykjavik for an extra cost). Once you're seated in this modified vehicle, designed for Iceland's rough terrain, the adventure begins.
First, you'll set off on Iceland's famous Route 1, which encircles the entire country. However, soon your driver will turn off to take you towards your destination through a stunning, otherworldly landscape.
Black volcanic sand plains from previous eruptions of the Katla volcano will appear before you. Enjoy the exciting drive through this ruggedly beautiful landscape, past mountains and glaciers, with the stunning contrast of black sand and green mountains. Don't forget to take pictures!
After the drive, you'll reach Myrdalsjokull glacier, where you'll put on your crampons and helmets. Be prepared for breathtaking views all around you as you start your ascent.
You and your group will climb up to the cave entrance, surrounded by beauty. You'll see crevasses, ice walls, and layers of ice and ash, which create unusual stripes on the glacier.
As you go inside to explore this ice cave, your guide will tell you how it formed and other fascinating glacier facts. You'll wander into its corridors and chambers and marvel over its striking, beautiful formations.
After a fascinating exploration, you'll exit the main cave, and your guide will lead you and the group to look for smaller ice caves. After that, you'll head back to the super jeep to return to Vik.
The return drive will be especially beautiful if you're traveling in winter. As the sun starts to dip behind the mountains, you can enjoy a wintery sunset that looks positively magical. You might even see the northern lights when the sky turns dark if you chose pick-up from Reykjavik!
If traveling in summer, you can instead enjoy the landscapes under the midnight sun for the whole journey.
Visiting ice caves is a unique experience as they are constantly changing with the movement of the glacier. As such, no two tours are the same, but all experiences with the ice cave of Katla are unforgettable.
