Ride a super jeep from Vik to Kotlujokull Glacier and step inside the Katla Ice Cave, with its blue ice and black volcanic ash, on this small-group tour.
You meet your guide in Vik Village and board a modified super jeep for the off-road ride, about 30 minutes across black sand plains framed by rugged peaks and ice.
Kotlujokull Glacier is an outlet of Myrdalsjokull Glacier, the fourth-largest glacier in Iceland, which covers the active Katla Volcano. When Katla erupted in the past, volcanic ash became trapped in the ice, creating the black-and-blue layers you see inside the cave.
At the edge of the glacier, you put on crampons and a helmet. Then you walk about 0.6 to 1.2 miles (1 to 2 kilometers) across uneven, icy terrain to reach the cave. The path is generally easy, and in some conditions you climb a few ladder steps over meltwater.
Inside, streaks of dark volcanic ash swirl through walls of blue ice. The ice of Katla is often compared to the "dragon glass" from Game of Thrones. Your guide tells you the story of the glacier and the volcano as you explore and take photos.
Meltwater and seasonal changes carve new chambers and passages in the glacier, so the cave may look different from week to week. Katla is one of the few natural ice caves in Iceland you can visit all year. Depending on conditions, you may also visit smaller ice caves nearby.
Then you ride the super jeep back to Vik, where the tour ends.
